Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour winners 2016

British Safety Council presents the most prestigious awards for the management of health, safety and environmental risks

The British Safety Council presented the prestigious Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour Awards for the exemplary management of health, safety and environmental risks to businesses from around the world at an Awards luncheon held at Drapers’ Hall in the City of London on 25 November. The winning organisations came from a wide range of industry sectors in the UK, mainland Europe, India and the Middle East, including construction, education and training, energy generation and distribution, food and drink, leisure, logistics, manufacturing, major hazards, retail and transport.

The 64 Sword of Honour and 18 Globe of Honour winners have demonstrated to an independent adjudication panel a proven track record of excellence in managing risks to workers’ health and safety and/or to the environment from the organisations’ activities.

Opening the Awards ceremony, Lynda Armstrong OBE, Chair of the British Safety Council, said: “On behalf of the trustees and staff of the British Safety Council, I sincerely congratulate this year’s winners. The Sword and Globe of Honour represent the most prestigious awards for the management of health, safety and environmental risks. With great pleasure, I note how many Globe of Honour winners we have this year. Leading organisations are increasingly adopting an integrated approach, placing environmental protection on an equal footing with health and safety, making their operations more sustainable.

“The winners of the Sword and Globe of Honour awards are beacons of excellence in their sector and they should be extremely proud of their achievement. It takes many years of hard work and commitment to reach this level of performance and we are delighted that we can celebrate their success together.”

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said: “Leadership is a key factor in achieving excellence. You can legislate for compliance, but you have to inspire people towards excellence. The winners of the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour Awards are exemplars of best practice and all have inspirational stories to tell about their journey towards achieving these accolades. These stories will inspire other organisations to follow their lead and move all employers towards our vision that no-one should be injured or made ill at work.”

The British Safety Council paid particular tribute to 14 organisations that won the double: both the Sword of Honour and the Globe of Honour. These were:

The winners achieved the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council’s independent Five Star health and safety and/or environmental management audits in the period 1 August 2015 – 31 July 2016. They also demonstrated to an independent adjudication panel that they had a proven track record and culture of best practice for excellence in health and safety or environmental management that runs throughout the business, from the shop floor to the boardroom.
