GMS Dubai shortlisted for the Maritime Services Award for its innovations in ship recycling & Sponsor of The Shipping Lawyer of the Year 2016

8th December 2016, Dubai – GMS Dubai, the world’s largest buyer of ships and offshore assets, was shortlisted for the Maritime Services Award at yesterday’s 2016 Lloyd’s List Middle East and Indian Subcontinent Awards, held at the Palazzo Versace Hotel, Dubai.

The award celebrates business excellence in ship management, services and ship agency. GMS was recognised for transformative leadership in ship recycling. On the same occasion, GMS sponsored The Shipping Lawyer of the Year 2016 award which was presented to Holman Fenwick Willan’s partners.

Handling about 35% of the industry, GMS offers end-to-end solutions that deliver exceptional customer service, peace of mind and competitive residual asset rates. Also, the company oversees the entire process of logistics and risk mitigation, and manages environmental challenges involved in the sale and transport of vessels for recycling, and the recycling process itself.

GMS is also pioneering sustainable ship recycling approaches. GMS works with its partner yards, particularly in South Asia, where more than two-thirds of the world’s ship recycling takes place, to improve health, safety and environmental standards. Two of GMS’s partner shipyards in India are certified, by ClassNK and RINA respectively, as compliant with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC). GMS has also invested in other yards in Alang and wider South Asia – helping them towards ISO and OHSAS accreditation.

Dr Anil Sharma, President and CEO, GMS commented: “Being a finalist for the Maritime Service Award is a real honour for GMS. Ship recycling is a crucial phase in the sustainable lifecycle of a vessel and is a necessary activity for all vessels. We strive to deliver services that do not just promote good business sense and CSR, but that are world-leading in providing the highest levels of convenience, confidence and care at all stages of its value chain.”
