Home HRAnniversaries The BDI@856 amid mega Geopolitical mayhem

John Faraclas

The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) gained 50 (indeed you read correct, fifty) points plus and now stands at 856 points, thanks to the as ever volatile Capers; Geopolitics and in general the masses all over Planet Ocean are in a very uneasy situation. John Faraclas’ daily recap:

The Capers’ rise of 185 points bringing the BCI 2014 over and above the 1,000 threshold at 1,134 points was the talk down in the Square Mile…

The Panamaxes’ BPI also on the rise clinching 19 points at 927…

The Supras’ BSI performed satisfactory gaining another 14 points and now read 797!

The Handies too saw its BHSI on a double digit figure gaining 10 points – now reading 420!

Despite the above upwards modus of the Dry Market uncertainty remains as a Damocles Sword above our heads…

An interesting report from VesselsValue on Dry Markets can be found here

The Wets once again with mixed results; the last published BDTI (Dirties) and BCTI (Cleans) stand at 852 – minus five, and 614 – plus two respectively. The Wet sector is facing a very tough period with the energy jargon ruling the day and there will be some hiccups which many ignore of their presence and accelerated projection. Let’s see tomorrow what Nicholas P. Tsakos, chairman of Intetanko has to say about “The State of the Tanker Sector” at the IMIF meeting.

The WTI stood at US$ 54, 35 – a dangerously rising level as same triggers tremors in the lower incomes worldwide and might have unpleasant repercussions. Pricing and profits are very important but beyond dirty games which benefit the very very very few and simultaneously can backfire. We are sending a warning message…

The Containerships still in dire straits and only after we see some further collapses and a streamlining of the entire box trade and its perplexed logistics – whether simple or reefer boxes, then we might possible see an upwards but controlled reversal and returns…

LNG and LPG should be carefully projected further as the broth might be spoiled.

One big question and dilemma is bothering all stakeholders: the environment and over regulation… By the way are we ready and prepared for 2020? Just wondering! From the 1st of January 2020  MARPOL Annex VI will limit the sulphur content in marine oils used outside an emission control for SOx )ECA-SOx) to a maximum 0.50% m/m…

Another issue is the one with the EU at loggerheads with the  IMO – an unwanted and silly with all due respect situation and it remains to be seen what next; our European clever dicks in Brussels must get its act together…

The Stock Markets are doing in my humble view well and the Dow Jones leads the way in the 10th trading day breaking another record: 20,810.32… All other major bourses maintained grosso modo their levels… It’s an oxymoron though that despite the euphoria and upwards trend, the Shipping Markets and Indices are down…

The Geopolitical front causes tsunamis so to speak in all longitudes and latitudes…

MIGRANTS; this issue is now dangerously spreading all over with mixed feelings from all involved… The beginning of a messy spring, summer and fall begins now. Let’s see how we are going to tackle this epidemic… for which the politicians, diplomats and their cronies are to blame; add the various business hooligans, and wrong capitalists who are looking for cheap labour and see what you get. Above all this MIGRANTS issue has nothing to do with the historical influx of MIGRANTS to the New World or to Australia or the one time blessed inter-European one… Now we are all worried of the destruction of social cohesion as well as the fact that amongst the Migrants we have fundamentalist Islamic Militants under cover as same have surfaced from many incidents recently aired… time to stop the influx and avoid the loss of life of many desperate people from Gibraltar up to Afghanistan and from the Caucuses down to the Horn of Africa. Isn’t time the UN Secretary-General creates humane, democratic and conversely safe conditions with appropriate interventions and if needed to arrest all those despots and their cronies, including warmongers who are to blame for ruining our lives… Remember also that the Shipping Industry has been hardly hit by Pirates and Terrorist from these clans so to speak making hell the life of Seafarers and their families… Shame! Time for a total recall. We had enough.-

The Wars in Syria and Iraq with ISIS and all these anti-government and religious as well as ethnic revolutionaries still at large assisting the work and interest of their proxy backers / leaders et al; CAUTION!

The region we specified above with its epicentre being the entire Middle East must see a change or else…Israel is very much concerned with all these happenings…

The situation also becomes a bit unclear as to the aims of the combatants and their backers following the election of president Trump; Putin having his own Russian agenda and Turkey trying to avoid its dismemberment – an unavoidable development according to well informed geopolitical and reliable strategists…

Turkey has become a nightmare for all in the region and the usage of this despicable method of blackmailing, until now everybody must stop here and now… As we have numerous times stressed Turkey is country to watch! What will be the aftermath of the forthcoming Turkish Referendum?? How president Erdogan can revive his country’s economy? How will he deal with the urgent Kurdish issue?

Next door Greece is also another country to watch on all fronts. The first timers of the SYRIZA left failed to deliver. Wonder if the Independent Greeks (ANEL) can have a future after the imminent collapse of this coalition given the failure to reform and deliver best from the strangulated Greeks from previous Greek regimes, the Germans and the Brussels lot… Add the infamous IMF’s inhumane attitude and see what you get. As I have numerous times explained, indeed I am a pro-European, but not under the wrong German-dominated hegemony, sorry… Also this has nothing to do with the majority of the German public, but only with certain influential elements of their current government and a few others in the other parties there… Solution for Greece: An ARISTOS team to govern for ten years, a GREXIT but retaining the EURO – it doesn’t necessarily means that opting out carries any currency preference/proviso – Greeks might opt say for the US Dollar!!! Above all, only a maximum E100 billion (onehunderedbillioneuros) should be returned flat to the lenders, no interest at all given the many scandals they committed by giving on purpose all these loans. Didn’t they knew? Last week the VP of the USA Mike Pence whilst visiting Europe for the G20 summit categorically insisted that all NATO members should open their coffers and pay-up. Greece is fine with its NATOic finances, but, repeat but Greece has been spending billions ever since the 1974 Cyprus invasion and fear of another Turkish anomaly in the Aegean and beyond and continued to spend all these billions whilst if NATO and the USA, Germany, France and Italy were fair, they should have reprimanded the Turks, an ally of Greece due to their common participation in the same Alliance… Now most of you know and others are reminded of this despicable situation… Get your act together as Greek Nemesis might saw her ugly face once again as it did when they send back the Persians …

BREXIT continues to be another major issue which for at least ten years will shake the universe and beyond. Whatever happens will happen. In the meantime in Ireland, the EU backs Dublin to open Northern island border… Watch this space! Gusted winds today claimed one woman dead and two other people seriously injured as a result of Storm Doris destroying whatever comes in its sway

At the other side of the Channel, next door in France, the students demonstrations are causing major problems with possible explosive repercussions if not contained and justice being done.Police fire tear gas against students who have been demonstrating and 16 schools are barricade… not a nice situation…

Russians are involved in cyber warfare and it remains to be seen how this affects both NATO and the EU. One can “understand” this during the Cold War; so what’s the issue now, eh! Both sides must speak up. The public cannot be manipulated anymore…

Who and why killed Kim Jong-nam? What agent was used and why. Everything involving North Korea must be exhaustingly checked…

In China there is a smart “offensive” from the Trumps and it seems it might work. Wondering though the Chinese reaction to this!

More news tomorrow where we are having the weekly recap!

The United States Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey R. Pyatt

On another note, two great events took place in Greece; one at midday on board the floating museum,  the S/S Hellas Liberty, moored at the Port of Piraeus for the double celebration/ anniversary organised by the Propeller Club of the United States of America, Port of Piraeus which we were fortunate enough to follow live, thanks to our friend Irene K. Notias who connected us with her pictures and video.  Commemorating the Friendship between the United States of America and Greece with a double event, the Anniversary of the Truman Doctrine seventy years ago, and the 190th Anniversary of the transfer of the U.S  Frigate Hope (Hellas) to Greece couldn’t happened at a better time given the prevailing circumstances! Guest of Honour and keynote Speaker the United States Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey R. Pyatt. Welcome Remarks by the Honorable Rhode Island State senator Leonidas P. Raptakis

Very touching also to see Zoe Lappa-Papamathaiou, one of the Governors of the Propeller Club getting so much involved , excited and feeling content, as well as many members and guests making George Xyradakis,   more than a happy president. Look for the write-up soon on this platform…

A very exquisitive shot credits Helen Thanopoulou – and what a statement she unleashed…

The other, it was the  WISTA-Hellas carnival party given that Greece celebrates the end of this year’s Carnival with a long weekend and … Bank Holiday Monday, being Clear Monday, the beginning of the Lent. From what we see it seems a great event. Congratulations to the Greek-Sea-maidens for keeping the moral high. Delighted to read the great time Dr. Helena Thanopoulou is having there… We will revert with a full account…

Until Monday, for the rest of the world and until Tuesday for the Greeks, have a nice long weekend and be on guard for every eventuality.
