London, 16 November 2017  Master Mariner, Captain Adrian Scales FNI, of Brookes Bell Group, the leading multidisciplinary consultancy to the maritime, offshore and energy, and industrial sectors, has been bestowed with a prestigious double honour in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the marine industry. Capt Scales was formally admitted as a Liveryman into the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, a City of London Livery Company and professional body for Sea Captains.  He was also awarded Chartered Master Mariner status, a brand new award recently approved by the Privy Council.

The induction of Capt Scales as a Liveryman took place in Liverpool on Thursday 9 November 2017 as part of the Company’s annual ‘Outport’ regional lunch at the city’s Liner Hotel. The title is reserved for Master Mariners of the very highest professional standing and repute and Capt Scales is currently one of only 190 Master Mariners worldwide to be granted the honour. The ceremony was especially significant in that it marked the first time in over 90 years since the Honourable Company of Master Mariners was first established, that a new Liveryman has been admitted in a ceremony held outside London. The event was attended by dignitaries and VIPs including HM Lord Lieutenant Mark Blundell, Liverpool’s High Sheriff Stephen Burrows, Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Malcolm Kennedy and Lady Mayoress Lilliana Kennedy.

The occasion also marked the presentation to Capt Scales of Chartered Master Mariner status. Capt Scales is only the eighteenth Master Mariner worldwide to have been awarded Chartered status, a hallmark of excellence that aims to have a positive impact across the UK industry and, eventually, across the global maritime domain as the scheme develops.

On receiving his awards Capt Scales said: “I am incredibly proud and humbled to receive these two prestigious awards from the Honourable Company of Master Mariners in my home city of Liverpool. I have worked incredibly hard to attain entry at this relatively early stage of my career in order that I can continue to provide mentorship to the younger generation of officers and future Master Mariners who are now starting to come through the ranks.”

He added: “Entry into the Honourable Company of Master Mariners provides access to the knowledge and expertise of some of the most experienced seafarers in the world. It is vitally important that we have the ability to transfer this knowledge and help nurture young men and women who have chosen to pursue a career as officers in both the Merchant and Royal Navies.”

Brookes Bell Manging Partner Colin Kershaw commented: “Brookes Bell is one of Liverpool’s oldest established marine businesses and our greatest strength is undoubtedly the quality of our people. The awards bestowed on Adrian provide global recognition of his personal standing and professionalism in the maritime sector but they also help reinforce Brookes Bell’s commitment to being the best of the best. We are proud of his achievement and proud to have people of Adrian’s calibre as part of the Brookes Bell family.”

Master of the Honourable Company, Captain Martin Reed, RD RNR, who conducted the award ceremony, said: “The most important role of the Honourable Company is the pursuit of excellence amongst the senior ranks of our profession and recognition of such achievements also by formal award of Chartership to only the highest quality applicants.  Their suitability is measured against a range of professional, technical, educational, philanthropic and personal development standards, and we are very pleased that Captain Scales clearly displayed his skills at such an early stage in his maritime career”.
