For football fans the world over Yaya Touré is considered a “legend” but for the fans of Olympiacos he is now elevated to the ranks of the Immortals.
Touré returned to Olympiacos, twelve years after his last season at the serial Greek Champions, on Sunday as arguably the most high profile free agent in world football.
Greeted by thousands of adoring fans waving flares in celebration at his return, Olympiacos then went on to beat Giannena 5-0 in the Greek Super League.
The capture of the four times African Footballer of the Year is an undoubted coup for Evangelos Marinakis, the Olympiacos Owner, who accompanied Touré through the throng of well-wishers.
Several Clubs from around the world competed to sign Toure as the legendary player faced a big decision as to where to see out his career.
Evangelos Marinakis said: “When I realised that for Yaya the idea of him returning to Olympiacos was like returning home the only option for me was to fulfil his needs and make sure that a dream comes true for our Supporters and for Yaya. I have little doubt that he will be a magnificent Leader both on and off the pitch for Olympiacos.”
Touré is one of the great player brands in world football and he undoubtedly adds to the lustre and brand value of Olympiacos, the serial Greek Champions who are one of the best known Clubs in the world who regularly compete in European competition.
Toure’s presence in the Greek Championship and the Europa League will make Olympiacos one of the teams to watch for football fans the world over.
