The BDI (Baltic Dry Index) losses were very much contained and let’s hope the reversal might come soon although the damage has been done… Geopolitics not just perplexed but explosive. John Faraclas daily recap:

The Capes’ BCI although it lost the 1,000 points threshold – an expected  situ, the losses of 30 points are just a fraction given the recent series of triple-digit losses; now at 984 expects

The Panamaxes’ BPI was the only single digit fall; now at 552 – minus eight ties to resurface…

Very low levels for the Supras’ BSI now at 438 sending some warnings… 12 points hurt…

The Handies’ BHSI might soon fall below the 300 point threshold  – now at 301  which is minus ten. CAUTION!

The Wets  losses were minimal; the last published BDTI (Dirties) and BCTI (Cleans) stood at 843 – minus five and 649 – minus four points respectively…

Containers going through a tough time… Caution…

All in all we have to confront tough times ahead with all indices still in red; let’s hope that the tough shipowners will make it… We are living in interesting times.

The WTI despite some highs (US$ 55.70 at 10:15 GMT) and lows (US$ 53.40 at 15:20 GMT)) during the course of the day it stood at US$ 54.76 – good…

On the Geopolitical front the same “basic” or better say “classic” by now issues remain:

The Migrants the faulty line from Gib to Afghanistan and from the Caucuses to the Horn of Africa and all within inclusive issues in full development… (Middle East including East Med and the Balkans being two of the worse headaches..)… Let’s see how the  meeting between Greece’s PM Tsipas and president Erdogan of Turkey evolves… CAUTION! Mind Cyprus…

Venezuela will tear apart Planet Ocean and together with the USA – China Trade War and BREXIT expect spill overs… You have been warned and conversely the Shipping trade – the Shipping Adventure will be more than exciting…

Instability ripples all over the African continent; are we going to see a total African Spring?

Will BREXIT bring back the Ides of March; just wonder as William Shakespeare know best…

President Putin closely watches everything these days… Russians trying to reassert ….

Happy Chinese New Year with whatever this entails… The Year of the Pig will be a big surprise…

On another tone and note the UK Chamber of Shipping had tonight its Annual Dinner at Park Lane’s London Hilton Hotel with nearly 800 guests. A great speech by the president Sir Michael Bibby – some interesting points:

Calling the UK government to end BREXIT in fighting and the need to put the future first and in particular cooling down political manoeuvring and egos…

…to grasp the opportunity to act in unison and reverse the late worrying developments on both the UK Flag and the tonnage tax scheme…

He also very eloquently stated: We cannot control BREXIT but we can control the future and the destiny of our industry…

Another good point was the development of innovation and green tech… as well as how the maritime 2050 is a great initiative and the efforts of all a must…

Will revert once we have his speech in full…

No comparison
