Τhe Club of Rome presents award to HELMEPA

On Wednesday 11 December 2019, during an event hosted at the Athens Club, the Greek Section of The Club of Rome presented an award to HELMEPA for “its diachronic sensitivity and actions to protect the environment”. The award was received by the association’s Secretary General, Ms Irene Daifas.

Addressing the event, the Chairman of Green Award Foundation and HELMEPA’s Board Member, Mr. Dimitris Mattheou, CEO of Arcadia Shipmanagement Co. Ltd, spoke about the efforts of the shipping community towards sustainable development and the importance of educating the human element in order to achieve it.

During his brief address, ΗELMEPA’s Director General, Mr. D. Mitsatsos, thanking the Club of Rome for this distinction, referred to the association’s voluntary efforts in shipping since 1982, as well as in protecting the country’s seas and coasts through the implementation of educational programs for children and environmental awareness campaigns. He stressed that the biggest threat today to marine ecosystems and humans alike are plastics in the marine environment, which may also “end-up on our plate”!

It is worth mentioning that “The Club of Rome” was one of the five international organizations to support ΗELMEPA during the association’s founding, urged by the late George P. Livanos.

The President of the Club’s Greek Section, Mr. Charalambos Mavroidopoulos mentioned that among their main priorities now is the preparation of youth leadership to address global climate change. In this context, the representatives of HELMEPA and The Club of Rome agreed to examine ways of closer cooperation.
