Journalists “navigate” tanker at HELMEPA’s Simulator

Representatives of Maritime Mass Media had the opportunity to live the experience of a virtual piloting of a super tanker in the Straits of Bosporus, acting as Captains at the Bridge Simulator, which HELMEPA presented to them yesterday, Wednesday 26 February 2020. They saw in action realistic scenarios of navigating and maneuvering a ship in calm as well as dangerous situations, which HELMEPA’s simulator offers to Member Companies for the training of their officers.

The journalists, playing the role of Master in the realistic atmosphere of the simulator, trying to pass their ship through the Bosporus Straits, recognized the vital contribution of virtual reenactment of bad conditions in the preparation of officers in dealing with the reality properly and calmly. Scenarios of bad weather, dense vessel traffic with poor light and simultaneous facing of mechanical problems, assist in the familiarization and understanding of how natural elements impact navigation and ship maneuvering.

State of the art electronic navigational aids such as GPS, AIS, Echo-Sounder, Speed Log, VDR, RADAR, GMDSS, VHF, Ship Control και Conning Display, ECDIS and the required external and internal communication systems comprise the certified by DNV GL high quality bridge simulator of HELMEPA for several types and dwt “vessels”.

The specific simulator is a kind donation of Associate Corporate Member DNV GL, in recognition of HELMEPA’s work for the voluntary refresher training of mariners for Pollution Prevention and the enhancement of Safety at Sea. In the period of the three years of its operation, there have been 148 seminars with the participation of 558 merchant marine and Hellenic Navy officers, 84 assessments of chief officers and 8 “tailor- made” seminars as requested by a Member Company.

The visit concluded with the presentation of a commemorative Certificate to each journalist while the lucky person of the draw was Mr. Minas Tsamopoulos, who won a pair of nautical binoculars for his future sea voyages.

Further information on the simulator seminars offered during 2020 can be found at www.helmepa.gr and tel. 210 9343088.
