Port sails through latest compliance audits

Portsmouth International Port has continued to be a global leader in compliance by recently completing two audits carried out by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, these audits must continue to ensure that standards are being met. In order to meet social distancing and essential work guidelines, these audits are currently being carried out remotely using tools such as Microsoft Teams. This included a number of detailed interviews conducted over the phone or via video conferencing with the senior management team and expertise from other departments.

The audits that were carried out were to check our compliance with ISO 14001 Environmental management and sustainability, alongside a renewal of ISO 45001 Health and safety. Three years ago we were one of the first organisations to make the transition from the previous OHSAS 18001 standard, which means we are one of the first to undertake a re-certification audit.

John Feltham, systems and standards compliance manager at Portsmouth International Port said: “Through the aid of modern technology we were able to undertake a robust process and provide assurance to our stakeholders that operations are running with full compliance. These may be extraordinary times, however we remain committed to quality standards, despite the challenges we’ve all faced”

One of the objectives of re-certification is to measure if an organisation has not only maintained standards but can also show through concrete evidence that they have improved over the three year period. The auditor has advised us that we not only met all the criteria on compliance, but also on improvement.

In the past 18 months, the port has won two major awards for a commitment to holding standards, including being named the International Quality Organisation of the year by the Chartered Quality Institute and achieving Sustainable Business of the year at the Portsmouth News Business Excellence Awards.

The port is also taking innovative action to tackle the issues of sustainability, air quality and carbon emissions. We have the most environmentally advanced terminal in the UK and have bold plans to introduce green initiatives across the site, with the aim of becoming the first net carbon neutral UK port by 2030, and the first zero emission port as part of the government’s Maritime 2050 strategy.
