Ocean Opportunity
Seafields Seeks New CEO
Seafields, a UK-based company focused on Sargassum seaweed aquafarms that capture CO2 and store it at the bottom of the ocean, is looking for a new Chief Executive Officer.

Launched in 2021 at COP26 in Glasgow, Seafields includes a team of entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers and policy experts. It is part the collaborative Ocean Visions research consortium and a member of the United Nations Global Compact SafeSeaweed Coalition.

The CEO will help lead company strategy, develop the leadership team, and manage the company’s business plan, while developing partnerships to accelerate growth. Interested candidates should contact Randall Purcell at randall.purcell@seafields.eco.

Congratulations to WOC Member ECOncrete, recent winner of the Startup Award at the 2nd Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina conference. ECOncrete, which develops concrete technology for more sustainable marine construction, received the award for innovations in marina infrastructure that protects the environment. ➣ Read more
Vesta Launches Coastal Carbon Capture Pilot
After 3 years of research and development, Vesta has launched its first field demonstration pilot for coastal carbon capture. The team, in collaboration with researchers from Stonybrook University and Cornell Cooperative Extension, is monitoring the impacts of olivine sand deposited at a site on North Sea Beach in New York. The data from this site will help establish the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) methodology needed for a sustainable economic model.

Vesta is seeking additional funding and partnership opportunities for this work as it plans more pilots in the US. Contact the team for more information.

WOC CEO Paul Holthus in Maritime Executive

WOC CEO Paul Holthus recently contributed to an article for the Decarbonization Playbook series, published by The Maritime Executive. Along with contributors Mikael Lind, Wolfgang Lehmacher, Louise De Tremerie, Frank Dubielzig, Ellinor Forsström, Andrea Morgante, Sukhjit Singh, and Lina Tenenbaum, Mr. Holthus considered private-sector enablers of decarbonization and their scalability to reach the goal of the Paris Agreement.

The World Ocean Council has joined the Chambers Climate Coalition, the International Chamber of Commerce platform for climate action from local business. The Coalition is a recognized member of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Ambition Alliance, and a contributor to the Race to Zero campaign. The coalition supports the sharing of best practices and policies to address both climate ambitions and business goals.
