The shipping industry is a critical component of the global economy, responsible for transporting goods and materials across the world. However, the shipping sector is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 2-3% of global carbon dioxide emissions. As the world strives to decarbonize and reduce its carbon footprint, the shipping industry is coming under increasing pressure to improve its environmental performance. It has been estimated that $1 trillion would be needed to decarbonise the industry by 2050.
The decarbonization of the shipping industry is driving changes in the types of fuels used for shipping, with a shift away from traditional fossil fuels to cleaner, low-carbon alternatives such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biofuels. The industry is also exploring the use of hydrogen as a means of powering ships. It is widely proposed that green hydrogen-based fuels can be used in the medium and long term as a way to decarbonise the shipping sector.
In recent years several countries have developed research capability to explore hydrogen technologies as a source of cleaner energy. However, the transition to cleaner green hydrogen fuels is not without its challenges. The limited availability of low-carbon fuels and the high cost of transitioning to new technologies are major barriers to widespread adoption. Additionally, the complexity of shipping operations and the high capital cost of ships make it difficult for individual companies to make the switch to cleaner technologies.
The decarbonization of the shipping industry is a complex and challenging task, but it is one that is necessary if we are to address the threat of climate change. By taking the necessary steps to utilise green hydrogen which might lead to nearly zero carbon emissions that set to improve the environmental performance of the shipping industry, support global economy and a more sustainable future for global trade.
