Yesterday, Friday 6th October 2023, Mr. Christos Pagidis, general manager, and his team of the shipowning company P&O Maritime Cyprus Ltd organised an splendid official inauguration of its new addition to the Cyprus fleet, P&O KALYPSO, which took place at the Port of Limassol.
The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Alexis Vafeades, and the Shipping Deputy Minister of the Republic of Cyprus Ms. Marina Hadjimanolis together with the other esteemed guests were present at this inauguration.
P&O Maritime Cyprus Ltd has undertaken the full range of the Marine Services at the Port of Limassol in January 2017 for a period of 15 years with the option to be extended another 7 years. They conduct approximately 3,500 vessels’ annually.
It was highlighted by the Deputy Minister of Shipping Ms. Marina Hadjimanolis that “since the signing of the Concession Agreements for the commercialization of the activities within the port of Limassol, Cyprus has benefited greatly by the exclusive range of port services provided by P&O Maritime Cyprus at the port of Limassol”. She conveyed gratitude and appreciation of the Cyprus government for P&O Maritime’s trust in the Cyprus administration and Cyprus flag. The Deputy Minister mentioned that from the etymology point of view the name KALYPSO may be derived from the Greek words “kali” and “opsi” meaning “beautiful sight” because the tug P&O KALYPSO is truly a “beautiful sight”.
For me, the lawyer who registered this tug boat with the Cyprus Registrar of Ships, it was indeed a very “beautiful sight” when onboard the tug. It was a wonderful moment seeing how all the technical and manning parameters fall into place in practice. The legal and documentary completion of the registration process is rather simple when comparing it to the real time operations of the tug. The tug master, Giannis Spyrou and the tug’s engineer Evripides Konstantinou showed and explained to us P&O KALYPSO from the technical angle. This revolutionary tug will no doubt mark a new chapter in P&O Maritime’s commitment to continually innovate, respect the environment, as well as improve efficiency and safety in their port marine operations in the port of Limassol.
Wishing P&O Maritime Cyprus Ltd milestone after milestone of achievements and the crew of P&O KALYPSO all the best and think safety first.
