EUROMAR Celebrates the 1,000th Vessel Registered Under the Portuguese Flag (MAR)

Thank you to all shipowners who have chosen Madeira as their preferred shipping registry.

The International Shipping Register of Madeira (MAR) has officially reached 1,000 registered vessels, marking a key moment in the growth of Portugal’s flag within Europe.

In the 11 years since EUROMAR’s establishment, nearly 200 shipping companies from around the world have chosen the International Shipping Register of Madeira (MAR), recognizing its quality services and commitment to European maritime standards.

Albrecht Gundermann, Co-Managing Director and founder of EUROMAR, states: “The development of the register is excellent. When we started eleven years ago, we had a clear goal in mind: to provide Europe with a reliable, fast, and innovative shipping register. The registration of the thousandth ship is a great acknowledgement of our commitment and of all entities involved in Madeira and Portugal, including the registry and the maritime administration. We want to continue this positive development and are already targeting 2,000 ships as our next milestone.

We are proud of the fact that from the very beginning of our cooperation, MAR has been growing predominantly with ships that previously had a non-European flag. This shows that the development from offshore to onshore is a real process. Over 90 per cent of the ships we manage come from offshore registries outside of Europe. This shows that it is possible to strengthen European flags with our services.”

Jörg Molzahn, Co-Managing Director and founder, adds:

“By reaching this milestone, we have achieved a significant goal. But we don’t want to rest on our laurels: Following the growth in various European shipping markets, we are particularly pleased about the recent decision of many Greek shipowners in favor of the Madeira Shipping Register. Greece has the largest owned fleet in Europe and decisions there are followed by the entire European shipping industry. Growth will therefore continue, driven by the diversity of all major European owner nations.

Our focus will continue to be on the qualitative growth of the register and the flag – in co-operation with the Portuguese maritime authorities and other stakeholders. In 2024, Portuguese-flagged ships consistently achieved top scores in the relevant maritime safety regimes, Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU. We also want to contribute further to the sustainability of maritime transport, together with our partner OceanScore, whose software solutions are supporting a wide range of shipping companies in efficiently managing the commercial processes related to EU ETS and FuelEU. The future belongs to safe, climate-neutral, and innovative shipping.”

The 1,000th vessel, STAR ASIA, a bulk carrier managed by Chartworld Maritime Management Corporation, based in Glyfada, Greece, joined the registry on December 9. The ship, built in 2017, changed its flag from the Bahamas to Portugal in Singapore. EUROMAR would like to thank Chartworld for their trust in choosing MAR, as this marks their second vessel to join the Portuguese flag.

The Portuguese Flag Celebrates a successful year of Growth in Greece

EUROMAR is very proud to share an unprecedented year of growth and acceptance in the Greek market. We have actively marketed the Portuguese International Flag for the past 10 years, and we feel privileged to have earned a place among the premier flags of the Greek shipping community. With over 100 clients now featured on our client list across all sectors and company sizes (both private and public), we fully appreciate that we must live up to the trust shown towards MAR and the entire EUROMAR team.

Quite aside from the thrust towards European content in 2024, we have experienced repeat business from clients who have willingly surpassed what has been mandated, as they felt very positive about their initial experience with the process. Equally, the realization has set in that a European flag can offer excellent, round-the-clock service while at the same time taking into account the commercial challenges that any management company faces — challenges that a credible flag should always strive to meet, to the greatest extent possible.

In this sense, we at EUROMAR feel that we have not only grown meaningfully in the Greek market, but that we have also successfully nurtured the idea that there is a solid position for a European flag in quality fleets — and that this trend can also add value to sound corporate governance.

As we move into 2025, we will continue building on our quality service with new initiatives, ensuring that we remain relevant and supportive to our quality-minded clients.
