Radu Burnete: Romania can transform the Port of Constanta into a strategic hub between Europe and Asia

Presidential advisor Radu Burnete said in Constanta that Romania has a “window of opportunity” to develop the Port of Constanta to an unprecedented level of regional relevance, underlining the need for massive investments in security, infrastructure, digitalization and human capital.

Radu Burnete said on Tuesday, after participating in a “port leadership” program organized by Bucharest Business School and ASE, that the Port of Constanta can become an essential strategic connection point between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The presidential official presented five priority directions for development.

The first aims at integrating into the European Union’s strategy for the Black Sea and hosting the future Black Sea Security Hub in Romania, along with significant investments in the military navy and coastal defense.

“Security means prosperity,” Burnete pointed out.

The second priority is to modernize road and rail connections, so that cargo flows can be efficiently directed from Constanța to Tulcea, Brăila, the north of the country or to the south, through Vama Veche and Burgas.

At the same time, the third direction is represented by the strengthening of the connection with the Danube, vital in the perspective of the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Burnete also emphasized the importance of digitalization and efficient port administration, as well as combating corruption and evasion. At the same time, he drew attention to the need for well-trained professionals and the involvement of competitive private companies in port operations.

“Constanța is losing traffic to ports in Greece or Croatia only because we have not done everything we can. Ports are economic engines, and each additional ship means prosperity and regional influence for Romania,” declared the presidential advisor, adding that the Presidential Administration will support the acceleration of the necessary investments.”
