Last week, CORE POWER attended the American Nuclear Society’s 2025 Winter Conference, where maritime nuclear emerged as one of the standout themes of the event. Sessions on maritime applications were consistently standing-room-only, with discussions across technical and regulatory tracks frequently returning to the sector’s growing potential. ANS even hosted a well-attended visit to the NS Savannah, underscoring the momentum building around new nuclear for maritime.

Key drivers of this surge include important regulatory developments in 2025, such as the IMO’s decision to begin updating its A.491 safety guidance and the IAEA’s development of the ATLAS framework for maritime nuclear licensing.

CORE POWER contributed across multiple panels and presentations throughout the week, sharing insights on regulatory pathways, containment and shielding considerations and emerging advances in molten chloride reactor technology.

With momentum at an all-time high, 2025 is shaping up to be the year maritime nuclear moves firmly into the mainstream.

We are excited to announce that the panel videos from ARGO: New Nuclear for Greek Maritime 2025 are now available on our YouTube channel.

Energy, water and port decarbonisation

In this ARGO panel, speakers from CORE POWER, Deon Policy Institute, Athlos Energy, EEAE and ABS Hellas examined Greece’s evolving role in the global energy transition.

They discussed how rising electricity demand, island energy challenges and Greece’s strategic maritime position create strong potential for floating nuclear power plants and next-generation reactor systems. The panel highlighted opportunities for Greece to align with emerging international nuclear maritime standards while developing the technical capability needed to support future deployment.

Across the panel, there was clear agreement that Greece must start preparing now — by establishing regulatory pathways, developing domestic expertise and engaging the public on safety and environmental issues.

PANEL ANNOUNCEMENT | New Nuclear for Maritime: A New Era for the United States – Building the business case for new nuclear in the U.S.

As the U.S. accelerates efforts to modernise and decarbonise its maritime sector, the need for firm, resilient energy solutions has never been clearer. Floating nuclear is emerging as a credible opportunity — one with the potential to reshape how America powers its ports, industries and ocean-going vessels.

In this session, Alice Caponiti will examine the business case for new nuclear in the U.S., highlighting commercial models, deployment pathways and the broader economic opportunities for a nuclear-enabled maritime economy.
