Historic Leadership Transition at MEDASSET: Lily Venizelos Steps Down After Nearly Four Decades of Service
MEDASSET – Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles announces that it’s Founder and President, Lily Venizelos, has voluntarily stepped down after nearly 40 years of continuous leadership and dedication to the conservation of sea turtles and their habitats across the Mediterranean.
Widely regarded as the “Ambassador for the Conservation of Sea Turtles,” Ms. Venizelos has devoted her life to advancing the protection of sea turtles, while consistently advocating for the essential link between healthy marine ecosystems and human well-being.
Founded in 1988 by Ms. Venizelos, MEDASSET was established with a clear mission: “Conserving Sea Turtles in the Mediterranean.” This mission remains at the heart of the organization’s work today. Under her leadership, MEDASSET has combined scientific research, rigorous documentation, and sustained policy advocacy to protect critical habitats across the region. Among its most significant achievements is its contribution to the establishment of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos in 2000.
Ms. Venizelos’ contribution has received wide international recognition, including the United Nations Environment Programme’s “Global 500” Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sea Turtle Society.
Marking this transition, Ms. Venizelos stated:
“With deep emotion, I close a chapter of nearly four decades devoted to the protection of sea turtles and the Mediterranean. While I step down from the presidency, I remain deeply committed to the vision that has guided my life’s work. This journey has been defined by perseverance, meaningful progress, and, above all, a remarkable community of people who believed that humans and nature can coexist in harmony — and worked together to make that vision a reality. I pass the torch with profound gratitude and great confidence in the future. MEDASSET’s mission is more important than ever, and I am certain it will continue to grow, inspire, and protect our shared natural heritage for generations to come.”
A new Board of Directors has been elected as part of MEDASSET’s governance transition. Dr. Francesco Saverio Civili, marine biologist and Contractual Advisor to UNEP’s environmental programme, has been appointed President, ensuring continuity of MEDASSET’s mission and reinforcing its strategic direction for the years ahead.
MEDASSET emphasized that Ms. Venizelos’ legacy provides a strong foundation for the organization’s future work. The Association will continue its efforts to protect sea turtles and safeguard the fragile ecosystems of the Mediterranean, guided by its long-standing commitment to sustainable coexistence between people and nature.
