Prevention at Sea Joins the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE)

Prevention at Sea, we have always believed that staying genuinely close to the industry not merely commercially, but professionally and collaboratively is what distinguishes a service provider from a true partner. Since our founding in 2013, we have actively sought to engage with the organisations and industry bodies that help shape maritime standards, not for recognition, but because participation in these conversations enables us to better serve our clients and contribute to an industry we care deeply about.

It is in that spirit that we are proud to have joined the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE), and to share what this membership means for Prevention at Sea and the clients we support.

We recognise the responsibility that comes with being part of such a respected organisation and are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to its mission of advancing excellence across the dry bulk sector.

Why DBCE Matters

DBCE is the organisation behind the Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS), one of the most comprehensive and practical self-assessment frameworks available to dry bulk ship managers today.

Structured around 30 subject areas spanning Performance, People, Plant and Process, DryBMS provides a clear benchmark for operational excellence and continuous improvement. As the dry bulk sector places increasing emphasis on transparency, consistency, and measurable performance, DryBMS has become an important framework for organisations seeking to demonstrate both commitment and capability.

The principles underpinning DryBMS strongly align with Prevention at Sea’s prevention-first philosophy: building systems, behaviours, and processes that proactively reduce risk rather than simply responding to it.

We have long admired DBCE’s efforts in developing and promoting this standard and look forward to learning from fellow members while contributing wherever we can.

Supporting Our Clients on Their DryBMS Journey

As a company dedicated to supporting ship managers with compliance, Safety Management Systems, auditing, and vetting preparation, our DBCE membership strengthens our understanding of the standard and reinforces our commitment to applying it responsibly and effectively for our clients.

Prevention at Sea supports dry bulk operators through:

• DryBMS pre-assessment reviews across all 30 subject areas

• Comprehensive gap analyses against DryBMS requirements

• SMS restructuring, simplification, and alignment projects

• Development of practical improvement roadmaps and corrective action plans • Ongoing support throughout implementation and continuous improvement initiatives

Our objective is always practical, actionable support that delivers meaningful improvements rather than a simple box-ticking exercise.

Alongside DryBMS, we continue to assist clients in preparing for RISQ (RightShip Inspection Ship Questionnaire), recognising that dry bulk operators often face multiple, overlapping assessment requirements. Our approach is holistic, ensuring that compliance frameworks remain coherent, efficient, and robust across all applicable standards and industry expectations.

A Privilege We Do Not Take Lightly

Over the years, Prevention at Sea has been privileged to develop relationships with some of the maritime industry’s most respected organisations, including INTERTANKO, INTERCARGO, DNV, ClassNK, and others. Each of these associations has broadened our perspective, strengthened our expertise, and ultimately enhanced our ability to support our clients.

We approach our DBCE membership in exactly the same way. With humility, respect for the organisation and its mission, and a genuine desire to contribute positively to the dry bulk community that has placed its trust in us.

This milestone fills us with both gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility. We remain committed to doing what we have always done: helping shipping companies achieve compliance in a practical, meaningful manner while upholding the highest standards our industry deserves.
