University of the Aegean: Pioneering Maritime Strategic Debate

The University of the Aegean recently organized a maritime strategic debate within the framework of the MSc Program “Shipping, Trade, and Transport – NAME” offered by  the Department of Shipping Trade and Transport. The event took place successfully on 16 June at the Maritime Museum of Chios. The debate involved two teams of NAME postgraduate students and focused on key issues in modern shipping, such as competitiveness, sustainability, geopolitical challenges, finance, digitalization, workforce skills, and development.

Unlike a typical student presentation, the debate aimed to apply strategic management principles to actual industry issues through argumentation, counterarguments, and dialogue.  Students of the MBA-Shipping Programme participated in the debate too and they were  also actively engaged as part of the audience, mirroring professional interactions seen in conferences, corporate settings, and real-world markets.

Chios, known for its rich maritime heritage and strong ties to the global shipping community, provided an excellent backdrop for this dialogue. The discussion emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between academia and the maritime sector to ensure that postgraduate programs remain relevant, forward-thinking, and in tune with industry demands.

This strategic debate represents a significant step for the MSc NAME program in enhancing its external focus, strategic positioning, and connections with the Greek and international maritime industries. It underscores the program’s dedication to updating its teaching methods to meet the changing needs of postgraduate students and the broader maritime landscape.

The overarching goal is to establish Chios and the University of the Aegean as a hub for academic and professional discussions on shipping, transportation, and global trade dynamics.
