MALTA MARITIME SUMMIT LAUNCHES THE PRESTIGIOUS MALTA MARITIME AWARDS 2026: NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

VALLETTA, MALTA — The Malta Maritime Summit is proud to announce the official launch of the Malta Maritime Awards (MMA) 2026. These awards celebrate outstanding achievements within the maritime sector, inspire the next generation to pursue rewarding maritime careers, and highlight the critical importance of this industry to Malta’s national economy.

The primary objective of the Malta Maritime Awards is to recognize the exceptional individuals and companies whose dedication and vision continue to strengthen Malta’s reputation as a leading global maritime centre.

Nominations officially open on July 24, 2026, and the organizers welcome entries from across the industry, including self-nominations. The strict closing date for all submissions is August 31, 2026.

Following the success of past editions—which honoured trailblazers such as H.E. Kitack Lim Secretary-General of the IMO, Mrs. Athina Martinos, and the late Dr. Arvid Pardo—the 2026 edition introduces a robust line-up of traditional categories alongside an innovative, crowd-sourced category designed to capture evolving industry trends.

Introducing a Novel “Open Category” for Unprecedented Achievements
In an exciting departure from tradition, the 2026 awards introduce the Other (Provisional Open Category). This groundbreaking addition gives the maritime community a direct voice in shaping the awards by allowing professionals to propose entirely unique achievements, niche innovations, or cross-disciplinary successes that do not fit into existing brackets. Subject to committee review, this category ensures that unconventional brilliance and rapid industry evolution are fully recognized.

Standard Award Categories for 2026

  • Newsmaker of the Year: Highlighting prominent industry voices.
  • Contribution to Maritime Law: Recognizing legal excellence and framework development.
  • Contribution to Maltese Merchant Shipping: Honouring core fleet and commercial advancements.
  • Contribution to the Yachting Industry: Celebrating leisure and superyacht sector growth.
  • Seafarer of the Year: Applauding exceptional service and dedication at sea.
  • Next Generation Shipping Award: Inspiring and elevating youth leadership.
  • Protection of the Marine Environment: Rewarding vital ecological preservation efforts.
  • Nautical & Cruise Tourism: Recognizing excellence in passenger and leisure maritime operations.
  • Sustainable Maritime, Logistics & Resource Operations: Focusing on green operations and resource efficiency.

Eligibility and Nomination Guidelines
The awards honour achievements within the Maltese shipping community. Eligible nominees include individuals or entities based in Malta, or of Maltese ethnicity if operating abroad. Non-Maltese companies are also highly eligible for service awards, provided they are demonstrably active in the Maltese shipping marketplace.

Past winners are welcome to be renominated across all categories, with the sole exception of the Lifetime Achievement Award, which cannot be won twice by the same recipient. To maintain absolute integrity, members of the independent 2026 judging panel, along with companies they manage or participate in as principals, are strictly ineligible for adjudication.

All nominations must be submitted in English and include the nominee’s name, company, and complete contact details (address, phone, and/or email). Each submission must feature a clear, legible statement of the chosen category accompanied by a precise justification text of no more than 500 words. For submissions under the Provisional Open Category, applicants must also explicitly state their proposed award title.

An independent judging panel, representing a broad cross-section of impartial maritime experts, will assess all entries democratically based on performance indicators such as innovation, business growth, environmental records, safety, and corporate citizenship. The panel’s decisions are final.
