Following World War II (WWII), the United States was committed to providing global leadership in civilian nuclear power. The ultimate goal behind this initiative was to bolster national security by establishing and maintaining its competitive advantage in nuclear technology vis-à-vis the Soviet Union (USSR). However, this advantage eroded, and now belongs to the United States’ acute threat, Russia, and strategic competitor, China.
Advanced nuclear reactors offer an opportunity for the United States to regain its competitiveness in the field, particularly as it relates to maritime applications.
Whereas the US has fallen behind in its maritime industrial base, maritime nuclear applications offer an ideal platform for the US to regain leadership while it builds a fleet of both power-generating vessels as well as those propelled by nuclear.
It appears we are on our way. Last week in Washington, DC Maritime Administrator Captain Stephen Carmel stated that steel will be laid for the first nuclear powered ship in 2028.
