The Hellenic Association of University Women (ELEGYP) participated in the final event of the European Erasmus+ Sport project “POWER – The Portrayal of Women Athletes in Sports Media,” held on 8 October 2026 at WHEN Hub Athens, Greece.
The Association was represented by Assistant Professor Dr. Sofia Mavrikou, a faculty member at the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) and a member of ELEGYP’s Board of Directors.
ELEGYP is a non-profit scientific association dedicated to promoting equal opportunities, strengthening the position of women in higher education and research, and supporting their participation in academic and public life. Through its activities, the Association advocates for gender equality and the elimination of discrimination.
The POWER project, co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Sport programme, seeks to promote fair, balanced and non-stereotypical portrayals of women athletes in sports media. Bringing together partners from six European countries, it addresses persistent disparities in media visibility and recognition through research, practical guidance, training and awareness-raising activities.
Fair media representation is more than a question of coverage: it can challenge stereotypes, acknowledge athletic achievements, and create positive role models for younger generations. The final event presented the project’s findings and resources and encouraged discussion among stakeholders working across sports, education, communication and gender equality.
Special recognition goes to ANCE (Athens Network of Collaborating Experts), the Greek partner of the POWER consortium, for its contribution to the project and to the event.

ELEGYP’s participation reflects its wider commitment to women’s empowerment and equal opportunities beyond academia. By engaging with initiatives such as POWER, the Association supports a broader dialogue on how women’s contributions can be recognized and represented more fairly across society.
