Industry leaders, including Tsakos Energy Navigation CEO Dr. Nikolas P. Tsakos and U.S. Coast Guard Captain Steven Koch, examine geopolitical uncertainty, maritime safety, and the future of sustainable shipping at NAMEPA’s Annual Conference in New York City.

New York, NY – November 5, 2026 – The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) convened maritime executives, government officials, industry innovators, and environmental leaders for its 2026 Annual Conference on October 29 at the 3 West Club in New York City. Held under the theme “Balancing Commerce & Conservation,” the conference brought together influential voices from across the global maritime community to address the complex challenges facing international shipping and explore opportunities to strengthen environmental stewardship, operational resilience, and industry collaboration.

The conference featured keynote addresses from Dr. Nikolas P. Tsakos, Founder, President and CEO of Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN); Captain Steven Koch, Chief of the Office of Operating and Environmental Standards for the United States Coast Guard; and Jan-Willem van den Dijssel, Americas Lead at Cargill Ocean Transportation and incoming NAMEPA Chairman.

Together, the speakers emphasized the increasingly interconnected nature of maritime commerce, environmental responsibility, national security, and workforce development, reinforcing the need for cooperation across the global maritime community.

A highlight of the conference was the keynote address delivered by Dr. Nikolas P. Tsakos, one of the international shipping industry’s most prominent and respected leaders. Drawing on decades of experience leading TEN and his longstanding involvement in maritime environmental protection through HELMEPA, NAMEPA and INTERMEPA, Dr. Tsakos offered a candid assessment of the geopolitical pressures confronting global shipping.

Addressing the effects of ongoing international conflicts, disruptions to global trade routes, and threats to maritime security, Tsakos emphasized the essential role commercial shipping plays in sustaining international trade and global energy security.

His remarks underscored the growing risks confronting seafarers operating in conflict-affected waters and the responsibility of the international maritime community to prioritize the safety of those who keep global commerce moving.

Tsakos also reflected on the importance of industry-led environmental stewardship, highlighting the longstanding contributions of organizations such as HELMEPA and NAMEPA in advancing marine environmental protection through education, cooperation, and voluntary industry action.

Looking toward the future, Tsakos proposed strengthening international maritime education and collaboration through an exchange initiative connecting American and Greek maritime cadets. The concept would provide opportunities for future maritime professionals to gain international experience, strengthen professional relationships, and develop a broader understanding of the global shipping industry.

Captain Steven Koch delivered a keynote address titled “Protecting America’s Maritime Domain—Where Safety, Stewardship, and Innovation Converge,” outlining the Coast Guard’s priorities for maritime safety, operational resilience, environmental protection, and industry collaboration.

Koch emphasized that maritime safety and environmental stewardship are fundamentally inseparable, noting that preventing marine casualties is among the most effective means of protecting the marine environment.

“We do not view sustainability and safety as a trade-off. We view safety as the essential prerequisite for sustainable technology to succeed,” Koch stated.

His address explored the Coast Guard’s efforts to modernize regulatory frameworks, strengthen maritime infrastructure, and support the safe introduction of emerging technologies, including alternative fuels, advanced propulsion systems, and digital maritime operations.

He further emphasized the importance of workforce development, recognizing NAMEPA’s educational outreach and ocean literacy initiatives as essential components of building the next generation of maritime professionals.

The conference also featured a series of industry discussions examining the evolving operational, regulatory, and environmental landscape confronting maritime stakeholders.

The “Challenges Facing Maritime Operations” panel, moderated by Ole Chr. Schroder of OSCO Maritime, brought together representatives from Carnival Cruise Lines, the North American Maritime Ministry Association (NAMMA), Blank Rome, and ABS.

The discussion explored the practical challenges facing shipowners, operators, and maritime service providers, including evolving regulatory requirements, workforce pressures, operational efficiency, and the need to balance commercial competitiveness with environmental performance.

Panelists emphasized that achieving meaningful progress requires collaboration across the maritime value chain, with industry, regulators, and technology providers working together to develop solutions that are both environmentally responsible and commercially viable.

The conference’s “Innovation in Action” session highlighted emerging technologies and industry initiatives designed to improve maritime environmental performance and operational efficiency.

Featuring representatives from Carbon Capture Machine, SMIT Salvage Americas, Wasteline Solutions, and DNV, the session examined practical applications of environmental innovation across the maritime sector.

Discussions addressed emissions reduction, alternative fuels, emergency response, waste management, circular economy practices, and technologies supporting more efficient and resilient maritime operations.

A leadership roundtable, composed of a select few of NAMEPA’s Annual 2026 Marine Environment Protection Award recipients further explored the sector’s long-term priorities, emphasizing the need for coordinated action on environmental performance, workforce development, technological advancement, and industry resilience.

Throughout the discussions, participants underscored that progress depends not only on technological innovation but also on effective partnerships, investment, and a shared commitment to responsible maritime operations.

The 2026 Annual Conference reinforced NAMEPA’s longstanding commitment to demonstrating that commercial success and environmental protection are mutually reinforcing priorities.

By convening internationally recognized shipping leaders, government officials, and industry stakeholders, NAMEPA provided a platform for exchanging perspectives, identifying shared priorities, and advancing practical solutions that support a safer, more resilient, and environmentally responsible maritime future.

Through continued education, collaboration, and industry engagement, NAMEPA remains committed to advancing its mission to “Save Our Seas” while supporting the maritime community’s ability to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.
