IMarEST’s ENGINE AS A WEAPON INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: CALL FOR PAPERS, THEME AND FIRST MAJOR SPONSOR ANNOUNCED
The challenge of total ship integration across the platform, combat and air boundaries, together with the reality of operating and maintaining these complex systems at sea are challenges which are being experienced by navies worldwide. The highly relevant and topical Engine As A Weapon International Symposium – EAAW VII (Bristol, UK: Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 June 2017), organised by FIGS Events on behalf of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), aims to explore the reality of fully integrated engineering systems and equipment, and discuss the merits and challenges of delivering combat power at sea. www.eaaw.org.uk
“We have taken ‘Combat Power at Sea’ as the theme of the seventh EAAW International Symposium and are delighted to have received an encouraging response to the Call for Papers,” explains Commander Ian Hassall RN, Chairman of the EAAW VII Technical Advisory Committee.
“Due to the considerable interest in next year’s Symposium, we have extended the deadline for receipt of synopses to 6 December, and we are looking for submissions that focus on: ship/air interface; non-conventional fuels; total ship integration; communication – threats and opportunities; enabling maritime force operations; All Electric Ship – past, present and future; weaponising the UXV; and open architecture versus system security. Our Technical Advisory Committee will be meeting in December to start the selection process.
“There is no doubt that at this fascinating time, the traditional marine and weapon engineering disciplines are being driven closer together by the explosion of technology, with an ever more complex and software driven landscape in which to operate. EAAW VII will bring together the international maritime community to update and discuss the delivery of Combat Power at Sea now, and the outlook and direction for the future.
“Importantly, like all IMarEST Learned Society events, it is CPD approved, something we take extremely seriously and of which we encourage all representatives of navies, commercial and military ship operators, designers and shipbuilders, classification societies, machinery and equipment manufacturers, universities and other defence related organisations to take full advantage.”

EAAW VII features
EAAW VII comprises keynote addresses and over 20 peer reviewed technical papers and discussion; a small exhibition; and a full networking programme, which includes the Symposium Reception on board Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s ss Great Britain.

EAAW Background
The first EAAW Symposium in 2004 was established by IMarEST to bring together and inform the marine and combat systems communities to ensure opportunities would be exploited and challenges overcome. It is held biennially.
What is IMarEST?
IMarEST is the international professional body and learned society for all marine professionals. With over 20,000 members in 128 countries, the IMarEST is the first Institute to bring together marine engineers, marine scientists and marine technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body.
In addition to a wide range of services, including publishing The Marine Professional, the Institute organises Learned Society events for its members and the wider industry, these include: the Engine As A Weapon International Symposia (EAAW); Marine Electrical and Control Systems Safety Conference (MECSS) and the International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition (INEC); the Learned Society events are organised by FIGS Events Limited on behalf of IMarEST.
