Zero Emissions Shipping Organization ZESTA’s Holding Inaugural Three-Day “SHIP ZERO – Charging to ‘True Zero’” During COP26 Glasgow
Once-in-a-lifetime shipping conference continues to attract top-tier industry experts to identify how the industry will reach zero emissions.
Glasgow, Scotland UK; 30 JUNE 2021: The Zero Emission Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) has announced an in-person, three-day, workshop – “SHIP ZERO – Charging to ‘True Zero’” – an opportunity for the international shipping sector to chart a course to true zero emissions for trans-oceanic shipping from November 1-3, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. The workshop runs in parallel to COP26 being held from November 1-12, 2021, also in Glasgow.
This unprecedented three-day event brings together global thought leaders and top decision makers to brainstorm disruptive solutions with industry peers. Experts will inform on game-changing zero emissions innovations and state-of-the-art zero emissions technologies. Finance and policy experts will share the latest intelligence on the tools and mechanisms required to achieve “true zero” in this decade.
“The time for half measures on climate action in the shipping sector has passed,” said Madadh MacLaine, Secretary General, ZESTAs. “That’s why we are bringing together industry, government and thought leaders to create joint initiatives that will provoke strong action in the first half of this decade. We have the technology to build, fuel and operate fully zero emissions vessels of every class and size. It’s time to do it.”
The three-day workshop will include robust technical presentations and speakers’ panels. Audience Q&A and brainstorming sessions will follow each session to facilitate collaborative solution building throughout the three-day event.
Highlights of the agenda include:
- Zero Emissions Vessels on the Water Today: Ivan Østvik of Norledreviews the Hydra, a hydrogen powered Norwegian ferry that can carry 80 cars and 10 trucks with 400kw of PEM fuels cells and 1.36 MWh of battery power;
- True Zero Emissions Vessels in Hard to Abate Sectors – in Design or Build: Dannielle Doggett, CEO of SailCargo Inc. will present on the design for their hydrogen wind cargo vessel;
- Mr. Sveinung Oftedal, chair of the International Marine Organization (IMO) intersessional working group on greenhouse gases will speak about recant outcomes of Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC76), implementation of short-term measures and upcoming IMO regulations.
There will be networking opportunities throughout the three days including buffet lunches and drink receptions with hors d’oeuvres at the end of each day.
“SHIP ZERO” presents a unique opportunity to discuss and create a new vision for the industry with fellow industry thought leaders and initiators in brainstorming breakout groups to formulate ways that policy, finance, market, and technology can all be used to leverage rapid transition to a zero emissions sector. The goal at the end of the three days is to produce a navigational chart with action waypoints guiding industry to the safe haven of “true zero.”
“We have organized this event to bring thought leaders and decision makers who are not afraid of change into the same room to share their knowledge and expertise, visioning joint solutions that will achieve ‘true zero,’” said Madadh MacLaine, Secretary General ZESTA. “Each one of these players has a piece of the puzzle that will build our ‘true zero’ future.”
In the weeks following the event, the outcomes of the brainstorming sessions will be compiled into a report to be distributed to legislators and industry stakeholders.

Day one: Zero Emission Ships and Zero Emission Ship Technologies
Zero Emissions Vessels on the Water Today: Ivan Østvik of Norledreviews the Hydra, a hydrogen powered Norwegian ferry that can carry 80 cars and 10 trucks with 400kw of PEM fuels cells and 1.36 MWh of battery power.
The second session will be about one of the most challenging ships on the seas. During True Zero Emissions Vessels in Hard to Abate Sectors – in Design or Build, Dannielle Doggett, CEO of SailCargo Inc. will present on the design for their hydrogen wind cargo vessel.
We will also hear from Roger Strevens VP, Global Sustainability at Wallenius Wilhelmsen about Orcelle Wind, a transoceanic Vehicle Carrier and Brent Perry, CEO Sterling Plan B Energy will tell us about the Evergreen State Ferry zero emissions conversion.
The third session will inform stakeholders about Onboard Energy Systems: Integration and Safety.The session will reviewenabling technologies, systems and safety, integration of hydrogen fuel cells, batteries and electrical drivetrains, including primary renewable energy recuperation.
The fourth session, Energy Efficiency and Fuel Reduction Technologies, will focus on capturing the power of the sea environment from crashing waves to the great and free enabler: wind.
In honour of Scottish tradition, the first day will culminate in a networking drinks reception followed by a traditional Burns Supper.
Day two: Zero Emissions Enablers: From Fuel to Finance and Policies to Ports
The day will open with finance. Michael Adams, CEO, Ocean Assets, will speak about blended finance models in his presentation How to Get the Money and Close Your ZEV Deal. We will also have an update on the impacts of the Poseidon Principles as well as learning about the UNEP FI sustainable blue finance initiative and what that means for zero emissions shipping.
The second session will discuss the policy picture. We will hear about recant outcomes of the most recent Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC76), implementation of short-term measures and upcoming International Marine Organization (IMO) regulations from Mr. Sveinung Oftedal, chair of the IMO intersessional working group on greenhouse gases, as well as Mandating the Transition to Zero-Emission Vessels: The Role of Command and Control Policies by Dr. Bryan Comer, Ph.D., Marine Program Lead at the International Council on Clean Transportation and frequent contributor to IMO work.
Session three will be about green ports around the world and how they are enabling the transition to True emissions through renewable based electrification and clean fuel supply. We will hear about the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach March to Zero Emissions from Cory Shumaker of the California Hydrogen Business Council and how Oostende Energy Port is enabling zero emissions via offshore wind and hydrogen from Wim Stubb, business development manager at the Port of Oostende.
The final session of day two will look at the fuel side. We will hear from renewable energy and green hydrogen production projects around the world, focusing on providing shipping with the clean energy required for its transition to “true zero.”
Day three: Charting the Course to “True Zero”
We will kick off the day with Scottish Breakfast of Champions – to get us ready to chart our course to “True Zero.”
This is when the real work begins of pulling together the ideas expressed, and technologies presented over the previous days and charting our course to achieving “true zero” for the entire shipping sector within the next two decades, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to avoid climate catastrophe.
But before we break out into groups and start brainstorming, we will learn about Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities and the wider challenges to shipping’s transition, including the human impacts of stricter regulations, as well as the results of doing nothing and how we can reconcile these differences from Michael Prehn of the Solomon Islands IMO delegation.
We will then look at how market factors can level the playing field for the least developed countries, small islands and developing states and countries situated a long distance from their markets while at the same time accelerating decarbonisation. Peter Nuttall, from the Micronesian Centre for Sustainable Transport, will inform us on the Carbon Tax Options for International Shipping.
