Deputy Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, supported by High Commissioner of the UK and Ireland, Obed Mlaba extends an invitation to all media to attend the Oceans Economy Investment Seminar on 7 July 2015 at South Africa House in Trafalgar Square, London.

Deputy Minister Chikunga is leading a high level delegation to the United Kingdom. Last week she led a delegation, representing South Africa at the 114th International Maritime Council in London.

The seminar on July 7th, the first of its kind since Operation Phakisa was launched by President Zuma in August 2014, will introduce the South African oceans economy to the United Kingdom (UK) market and encourage investments in the areas of maritime infrastructure, services and operations as well as promote education and training partnerships. In addition, the seminar will also discuss initiatives and opportunities in the sectors of Maritime Transport, Off-shore Oil and Gas, Oceans Governance and Security as well as in Aquaculture, respectively.

South Africa’s participation during the seminar will comprise senior, Maritime Industry, Government and Maritime Industry Sakeholders. This will ensure suitable interfacing between South Africa and the United Kingdom thus also signal South Africa’s commitment to expediting the activation of this new economy, which it is earmarked will contribute £9, 8 billion by 2033 to the South African Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

At the Mission level, considerable work remains ongoing in order to mobilise focused attendance and participation from within the UK. Equally, expressions of interest to attend and participate in the seminar continue to flow in. The inaugural one-day seminar will bring together a host of experts to engage in each of the thematic sessions as already outlined and create a space for collaborations and investments.

The seminar will be preceded by a series of site visits on the 6th, with the seminar itself commencing on Tuesday, 07 July 2015 at the South Africa High Commission, at South Africa House, at Trafalgar Square, London between 8:30 at 16:00.
