DATE: September 05, 2012 COUNTRY: Nigeria PORT: Lagos Ports & Terminals Tanker hijacked off Lagos

A maritime security alert has been issued for the Gulf of Guinea after a tanker was reportedly hijacked from Lagos, Nigeria.

The vessel’s name was unavailable at the time of writing, but is said to be Singapore-owned. Reports claim the tanker was laden with fuel and is now sailing into the Gulf of Guinea, which suggests that some or all of its cargo will be offloaded into a waiting vessel and subsequently sold on the region’s illegal fuel market.

Tanker hijackings and fuel theft have increased in recent weeks; two similar hijackings occurred off Togo in August. Most recently, MV Energy Centurion was taken from Lome anchorage and had approximately 3, 000 tons of gas oil stolen (worth around US$3 million at market values), along with ship’s equipment and crew valuables, before it was released from control.

Vessels anchored or drifting in the Gulf of Guinea remain vulnerable to opportunistic robberies, as well as coordinated higher level attacks and hijackings. Crew preparedness and a layered defensive system, including a citadel that can sustain life for 48 hours, are strongly recommended to mitigate the risk of successful attack.

UPDATE: The tanker is reportedly 51, 000 DWT Abu Dhabi Star, a Singapore-flagged product tanker operated by Pioneer Ship Management Services. The attack occurred whilst the tanker was drifting approximately 14NM off Lagos on 4 September, and reports suggest all crew managed to muster in a citadel. No further information was available at the time of writing.
