National Holiday declared for elections

Monday 4 March has been declared a National Holiday in Kenya due to general elections being held. All offices will be closed.

The voting process is likely to continue on 5 March as many civil servants and public sector employees will travel to their home areas to vote.

As a result, a reduction in service levels and speed of service may be likely from Customs authorities over the course of next week.

Indian charts to be kept on board

The Gujarat Maritime Board has advised that it make mandatory for all vessels calling at Gujarat ports and coastline to carry Indian charts on
board.

Anchorage reopened as cyclone tracks inland

Port Hedland anchorage re-opened at 1000 today (28 February) and the port was due to re-open for inbound movements from 1600.

Tropical Cyclone Rusty continues to track inland and as it does so, weather conditions are forecast to improve significantly of the next 6-12 hours.

Svitzer announce tariff increases

Towage operator Svitzer has announced that it will implement tariff increases at all Australian ports where it operates on 1 April.

From that date, the tariff at the below ports will be adjusted as shown below (as some ports have had changes less than a year ago, the percentage has been adjusted appropriately):

Adelaide Region – 4.00%
Albany – 2.70%
Ardrossan Lines – 4.00%
Brisbane – 3.50%
Bundaberg – 3.50%
Eden – 6.50%
Eden Lines – 4.00%
Fremantle & Kwinana – 4.00%
Geelong – 3.00%
Kwinana Lines – 6.70%
Mackay – 2.20%
Melbourne – 3.50%
Newcastle – 10.00%
Newcastle Lines – 5.00%
Port Botany – 3.50%
Port Jackson – 4.50%
Port Jackson Gore Cove – 4.50%

Towage service tariff to rise

Svitzer, the towage operators in the port of Newcastle, has announced a 10% tariff increase for towage services with effect from 1 April. Linesmen services will increase by 5%.

It has also been announced this week that with effect from July, PB Towage start operations in Newcastle offering a towage service in the port with four tugs.

Terminal charges to rise

With effect Monday 11 March, terminal charges at the port of Trieste will increase by about 2.4%.

Further, a small mark-up is expected in the tariff for the Mooring-Unmooring service in the next few weeks.

Transit dues exception
 
Due to the interruption of work at Sukhna  port and the fact that container ships are currently unable to unload cargo at Sukhna, the Suez Canal
Authority has decided to apply Circular No.1/2012, whenever necessary, as follows:

The Suez Canal authority has decided that the above mentioned ships shall enjoy transit dues exemption on their return trip on the following
conditions:

1) Ship master has to provide a statement of the number of containers coming to Sukhna port.

2) A certificate from the discharge port showing the number of containers that had been discharged and that egypt is the destination of such
containers and also showing the departure date of the containership.

3) The container ship has to make a direct return to transit the Suez Canal southbound without carrying out any charging operations.
