Green Shipping – is it all Hot Air? asks WISTA-UK
Senior maritime personalities will debate “This House believes that the demands for ever-greener shipping are so much hot air” in the evening session of the WISTA UK Forum on 11 September, running as part of London International Shipping Week, 9-13 September 2013.
The debate, moderated by Jim Davis, chairman of the International Maritime Industries Forum and a WISTA-UK Ambassador, will highlight the huge impact which environmental regulations – both existing and proposed – will have not only on ship owners and operators but also on the wider maritime industry and, indeed, on every member of the public who buys or uses goods sourced from overseas.
The panellists for the debate are well known figures worldwide within their speciality; Katharina Stanzel, managing director of INTERTANKO and WISTA Personality of the Year 2012; Dr Anne-Marie Warris, a top expert in sustainability, environmental and climate change questions; and the distinguished shipping journalists Michael Grey and John Faraclas.
The debate – the latest in a series of annual debates hosted by WISTA that have attracted widespread attention in maritime circles – will follow a full day of lively discussions at other sessions during the WISTA-UK Forum.

The opening session of the WISTA-UK Forum will aim to help conference delegates make the most of networking opportunities, with specific reference to the value of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques. Other sessions will tackle the topic of safety of seafarers in West Africa at a time of growing piracy, and will ask what can be done to ensure more progress in ensuring that women have a fair share of top jobs.
The panellists at the session ‘How safe are our seafarers and ships in West Africa?’ include a chief engineer who was held by Somali pirates for eight months.
