The Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, HELMEPA, commemorated 32 years of proactive operation by organizing a Conference on “Energy Efficiency Measures on Existing Vessels” during Posidonia 2014, on Wednesday, 4 June, when distinguished personalities presented interesting current topics.
Dr. Ing. Henning Brauer, Principal Consultant Maritime Advisory, DNV GL, spoke on the potential for Eco Retrofit options. Professor Nikolaos P. Kyrtatos of the National Technical University of Athens, provided a critical overview of energy efficiency improvement measures on existing vessels. Mr. Dionisis Antonopoulos, Technical Service Manager, Wärtsilä Greece S.A., gave the audience an insight into the LNG alternative. Mr. Dimitris Vastarouchas, DCOO/Technical Director, Danaos Shipping Co Ltd, offered a fascinating glimpse into bunker consumption monitoring and reporting systems they are using on their ships. Mr Jeffrey G. Lantz, Director, Commercial Regulations & Standards, US Coast Guard Headquarters and Chairman of IMO Council, invited by HELMEPA, flew in specially from Washington DC and presented “The issue of ship efficiency at IMO from the US perspective”, giving participants the latest information on current US standards, future directions and more particularly, the relevant US submission to IMO.
The 30-year-long relationship built on mutual respect between HELMEPA and the US Coast Guard was once again affirmed by Mr Lantz, when he presented the Association’s new publication, “HELMEPA’s Guide on US Coast Guard Port State Control Examinations”, to the participants at the conclusion of his presentation. The publication in English, is a product of a joint HELMEPA and USCG decision taken in May 2013, is addressed by Admiral J.A. Servidio and provides comprehensive guidelines to comply with Port State Control as it is executed by the USCG on foreign vessels. “This effective all-inclusive publication will undoubtedly prove to be an invaluable tool on board HELMEPA member-vessels sailing in US waters”, Mr Lantz stated.
Copies of this Guide will shortly be disseminated throughout HELMEPA’s membership and the Association looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the US Coast Guard into the next 30 years!
