Ecorys’ Intermodal Links develops intermodal planner for Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven

The intermodal planner supports the Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven JadeWeserPort in achieving its growth targets by clearly showing the benefits of multimodal transport that uses the port of Wilhelmshaven. Logistics companies can save on costs and can reduce their environmental impact by using intermodal transport to and from the port area. The online planner shows the optimal route to almost all locations in Europe and unlocks the
intermodal hinterland of Wilhelmshaven.

In addition to location and draft, good intermodal hinterland connections determine the competitiveness of a port. Linked directly to quayside transshipment in Germany’s only deep-water port, the multimodal transport terminal is the ideal logistics hub for transports with containers, semitrailers and swap-body platforms. With the new intermodal planner, Wilhelmshaven shows more connections than expected. The online planner will be launched officially during Intermodal Europe 2014 in November.

MCI eyes “revolution” of mango trade

A recent test in Ivory Coast shows how West Africa’s mango trade can be extended by special containers that place the fruit in hibernation.

Farmers in Ivory Coast struggle with a mango harvest season that is as short as the fruit is sweet. “For a 4-6 week period in April and May, the country is flooded with good mangos, but it ends abruptly when the rainy season starts. From then on, the mango just starts decaying, ” explains Mathew Shed, container manager in the specialist shipping company Africa Express Line (AEL).

“We were approached in April by Eolis, a CF logistics company, who asked for some kind of smart solution that would keep the fruit delicious and marketable for a longer time, ” he adds. The solution turned out to be special reefer containers. With quick help from a container leasing company and a container depot in Antwerp, Belgium, Star Cool containers were upgraded to work with controlled atmosphere, in short known as CA, and sent to Ivory Coast.

SPC Germany (ShortSeaShipping Inland Waterway Promotion Center)

The German ShortSeaShipping Inland Waterway Promotion Center is a public-private-partnership located in the Federal Ministry of Transport. The organization which is co-financed by the public sector is part of a pan-European network. It has been initiated by the European Commission, in order to strengthen alternative – especially waterborne – modes of transport like shortsea- and inland waterway shipping.

SPC is providing information on intra-European shipping- and rail-traffic as well as on handling options in the context of multimodal supply-chains. Its intention is to create a higher transparency on the market’s supply-side and the systemically opportunities of waterborne and rail carriage of goods, to result in an increased usage of those modes of transport. Since the foundation in 2001 the SPC acts supplier neutral in all projects.

The SPC’s competence network includes 11 public and 40 private members.

The SPC are co-exhibiting at Intermodal Europe 2014 on stand B90 with H&S Container Line. For more H&S Container Line news,  click here
