England’s South-West region has added SPNL’s south-west mentee-branch, the Shipping Professional Network South West (SPNSW) to its rich maritime heritage, which is embodied in both the great marine industry and Plymouth University’s world-class teaching.
SPNSW aims to create a networking platform throughout the next year where students, lecturers and industry professionals can build beneficial relationships for the future, which will position the industry’s next generation as young shipping professionals of tomorrow.
It was launched during the inauguration conference and networking event of Plymouth University’s shipping society (PIMSSS), which will be working in close partnership with SPNSW. Several professionals, lecturers and many students enjoyed presentations from Commander Jacqueline Sherriff MBE who presented on the EU Naval Force counter-piracy actions in Somalia and SPNL’s Chairman Claudio Chistè, who works at Investec Bank plc, who spoke about Ship Finance.

In welcoming SPNSW, Claudio Chistè, added: “We are delighted to welcome SPNSW into the SPN family. We recognise that today’s students are tomorrow’s young shipping professionals. Since SPNL and other SPN organisations around the world, such as Mumbai, Copenhagen and Hamburg are aimed at young shipping professionals – who are typically at an early stage of their career, a need was identified for a similar type of platform for students. As the transition from the student life to that of a professional is not always straight forward, SPNSW seeks to bridge this gap, ensuring the next generation is well positioned.”

SPNSW will be led by Christian Freuling, who has also attended last year’s launch of SPNL’s Hamburg spin-off branch, SPNH, and Jimmy Farrow, both maritime law students at Plymouth University. The next event is planned for September/October 2015 in partnership with PIMSSS.
