Agnes Choi and Colin Sprott take on prestigious roles at IUMI

By James Brewer

Two new executive committee vice-chairmen have been selected by the International Union of Marine Insurance.

The choice of Agnes Choi of Hong Kong and Colin Sprott of Lloyd’s was unanimously backed by the IUMI 2015 conference in Berlin. Both have been strong supporters of IUMI.

Ms Choi is chief distribution officer for property and casualty at AXA General Insurance Hong Kong. She is a member of the governing committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers, of which she is a past chairperson.

HKFI enjoys recognition by the Hong Kong SAR Government as the representative insurer body of the industry and is responsible for the administration of some 70, 000 registered insurance agents in the territory. Before joining AXA in November 2012, Ms Choi was head of corporate insurance at HSBC Insurance, a role she had held since 1994.

She was chairman of the much-praised conference organising committee for IUMI’s 2014 gathering in Hong Kong, the first on Chinese territory.

Mr Sprott is a key underwriter at Lloyd’s for Connecticut-based Navigators Group, an international specialty insurance company. He has been president, global marine, for Navigators since April 2013, and is chief underwriting officer of international insurance and active underwriter of Lloyd’s Syndicate 1221.

Before joining Navigators, Mr Sprott was managing director of XL Ltd, responsible for global marine and offshore energy operations, and deputy underwriter of XL’s Syndicate 1209 at Lloyd’s. His earlier career involved management positions with American International Group and Sedgwick Insurance Brokers.

In addition to his IUMI work, Mr Sprott has been a committee member of Lloyd’s Market Association.

At IUMI, Ms Choi and Mr Sprott succeed as vice-chairmen London’s Richard Turner, global marine director at RSA, and Singapore-based Mike Davies of XL Catlin, who leads his company’s marine and offshore energy business in the Asia Pacific region. Mr Turner and Mr Davies stood down on the expiry of their terms as vice-chairmen.

Continuing as vice-chairmen are Frank Costa, Alessandro Morelli, Lars Rhodin and Shinji Urano.

Earlier, among obituary notices, IUMI president Dieter Berg paid tribute to Denzil Stuart, who passed away in April 2015.

Mr Stuart was a consultant and press officer to IUMI for many years until 2011, and a long-time contributor to leading maritime publications. He had during his long career represented many marine insurance organisations including the UK P&I Club, the American Club and the Strike Club. Mr Berg said that Mr Stuart had an excellent reputation and was noted for the reliability of his reporting.
