The raising of this gigantic Greek flag at the Port of Chios, on Chios Island, in the eastern Aegean Sea took place the day before the 103rd anniversary of the liberation of this historic, martyred and maritime island from Ottoman rule on the 11th of November 1912. It coincides with the day of the Patron Saints of the Island: Minas, Victor and Vicentios.
This enormous blue and white stripe flag was donated by the Holy Metropolis of Chios, is 150 sq m in size and this is the second time it has been raised in the south breakwater of the port.
The President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos will honour tomorrow with his presence the celebrations, responding to the invitation by the deputy governor of Chios Stamatis Karmantzis.
Chios, like all the Greek islands of the Eastern Aegean Sea (Lesvos, Samos, Kos, Leros and others) has been hit by an enormous influx of migrants and refugees never witnessed before and it is about time things returned to the norm. NO excuses allowed! Brussels must make or break; enough!
