Widest chemical resistance from a two-coat phenolic epoxy system that provides potential of over 20% efficiency savings at installation and well proven operational performance.

Pittsburgh, USA, 07 December 2015. PPG Protective and Marine Coatings has unveiled PHENGUARD PRO, a tank coating system that offers unrivalled benefits to both shipyards and ship-owners.

For shipyards and at installation, the coating system provides potential efficiency gains of over 20% compared to traditional three-layer coating systems. For owners it provides the widest chemical resistance and the longest carriage time on the market of more than 3, 400 cargoes, delivering maximum flexibility to the product tanker trades.

Building on more than 40 years of successful practical experience in this field,  PHENGUARD PRO is a new premium tank coating solution that has been specifically designed for use on IMO II and III chemical/product tankers typically in the 30, 000–60, 000 dwt range.

Sijmen Visser, PPG’s Global Marketing Manager Marine, said: “PHENGUARD PRO is truly a game changer for the product tanker market offering shared benefits to both the shipyard and owner/operator by combining over 20% efficiency gains on application at newbuild and/or maintenance with trusted and proven performance for the owner. Based on our 40-plus years track record on more than 1500 vessels with this product technology, PPG has again delivered a top quality product that also represents best value to all stakeholders in the IMO II/III product tanker segment.”

PHENGUARD PRO has been developed from the PHENGUARD phenolic epoxy product technology which has been the benchmark in the chemical tanker market for more than 40 years.

PPG identified market demand in the IMO II/III product/chemical tanker segment for a two-layer phenolic epoxy system that offers maximum cargo flexibility with improved efficiency at installation. The result is PHENGUARD PRO, engineered and launched for both newbuilding and refurbishment projects.

Sijmen Visser adds: “PHENGUARD PRO achieves in two layers of 125 microns, what all other tank linings can only achieve in three. The coating system can be applied in temperatures down to 5°C making it an ‘all year round’ solution that reduces the costs of heating for winter application. With this addition to our product and chemical tank lining range we now have the most complete

offer to this market with experts ready to support product selection with the best possible advice.”

Finally,  PHENGUARD PRO provides a very smooth finish that is easy to clean, thus saving time and labour at cargo switching and tank cleaning. Ship owners will also benefit from well-documented guidance and procedures for cargoes requiring pre-wash, thus extending the coating life.

PHENGUARD PRO builds on the heritage and track record of the original PHENGUARD products, a tried and trusted tank coating system that has been on the market for almost half a century and has been used on over 1, 500 vessels.
