Construction of a 55, 000 sqm logistics center for the German-wide distribution of furniture and furnishings of the Steinhoff Group / Connection to duisport logistics hub was decisive factor / Approximately 200 new workplaces

Duisburg,  8 April 2016. The Steinhoff Group, one of the world’s leading providers in the furniture industry, domiciled in South Africa, will be the first company to set up operations at the logistics area logport IV in Kamp-Lintfort with its subsidiary Global Warehouse. Thus it took just three months after the start of the site development plan for logport IV to acquire its first large client. The prompt reactivation of the former coal storage location was made possible by the intensive collaboration with the city of Kamp-Lintfort. The 30 hectare plot is marketed by logport ruhr GmbH, a joint venture between Duisburger Hafen AG and RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH, with the support of wir4-Wirtschaftsförderung, a consortium of the cities Kamp-Lintfort, Moers, Neukirchen-Vluyn and Rheinberg.

“The settlement of the multinational Steinhoff Group confirms our strategic approach of moving to implement the logport concept – which has been so successful in Duisburg – in the wider region, ” says Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. “As the largest land provider in the Rhine-Ruhr region, we have many attractive lots that offer optimum connections to international transportation routes via the Port of Duisburg.”

“We are pleased that our joint venture logport ruhr is able to realize this first success on the former mining area in Kamp-Lintfort, ” says Prof. Hans-Peter Noll, Chairman of the Board at RAG Montan Immobilien. “The new logistics center is another symbol for the sustainable and responsible management of former industrial areas – a good example for the concept of structural change through the revitalization of unused areas in the region, and a positive example for similar potential areas.”

A 55, 000 sqm distribution center for the storage and distribution of furniture and furnishings will be built on a 108, 000 sqm plot of land. The new logistics center will be used mainly to expand the e-Commerce activities of the Steinhoff Group. Both the regional and national distribution of furniture and furnishings will be processed through this location, which is situated directly on the feeder highway B 528. The planned start-up date is spring 2017. The settlement of the new business will create approximately 200 workplaces over the medium term.

“The settlement of the Steinhoff Group represents an important starting point for the further development of this area, and will serve as a point of attraction, ” says the mayor of Kamp-Lintfort, Prof. Dr. Christoph Landscheidt. “I hope that this will also speak to other companies with many highly-qualified workplaces.”

The logport IV location was able to beat out other competing locations. One of the reasons was the fact that logport ruhr was able to secure the immediate availability of the land parcel. Furthermore, the duisport Group also impressed with its extensive logistics know-how, and developed an entire turnkey project for the Steinhoff Group. In addition, the connection to the terminal infrastructure and the international network of the Port of Duisburg also offers considerable added value to the Steinhoff Group.

“The close proximity to the highly-efficient duisport logistics hub was the main factor behind our decision to move to logport IV. In the future, all containers for our logistics center will be delivered and processed through the Port of Duisburg, which offers optimum connections to all relevant sea ports and distribution centers in Europe. This will have the effect of significantly improving efficiency in the supply chains”, says Hans-Ulrich Bussas, Managing Director of Kappa Immobilien Verwaltungs GmbH & Co. KG, the investor company of the Steinhoff Group.
