At 2 p.m., Typhoon Sarika was estimated to be about 540 km south of Hong Kong (near 17.5 degrees north 113.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 km per hour across the central part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.Under the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Sarika, local winds will generally strengthen progressively today.
According to the present forecast track, the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 [which means that winds with mean speeds of 41-62 km per hour are expected] will remain in force today [17 October]. Squally showers started to affect the coast of Guangdong and there will also be swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports. New passenger terminal opened |

The newly reconstructed building at Murmansk port’s passenger terminal has been opened.The renovated building, which opened for operations on 4 October, boosts the infrastructure for servicing of passengers coming to the port by marine transport. It is part of a project which includes the reconstruction of the pier for long-distance lines, bank protection facilities and improvement of the adjacent territory.
The passenger capacity for internal lines is 50 passengers per hour, and 120 passengers per hour for international cruise lines. Under the Federal Target Program, a State Border checkpoint will be established in the terminal building by 2018. Novorossiysk Port has been closed since yesterday (16 October) midday due to strong northeasterly winds. Sheskharis Oil Terminal halted loading operation the same day. All tankers have been shifted to outer roads. The actual wind force is 30-33 m/sec.Gale warning # 171 in NOVOROSSIYSK area declared at 12:15 today: Wind: NE 20-25 m/sec. Sea swell: 1.3-2.0 m.
