The Piraeus Marine Club attracted almost 200 guests and was overflowing with key Greek shipping stakeholders on Monday, May 22, 2017, who gathered to hear the Club’s esteemed guest speaker, the President of New Democracy and Leader of the Government Opposition Party, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as a part of the Club’s ongoing Series of Working Luncheons aiming to engage members through discussions of current affairs.
Mr. Mitsotakis began his address by emphasizing the critical role that Greek shipping plays not only in the Greek economy but also with respect to competitive position of the EU in the global shipping environment and referred to the need to leverage that position for Greece in the future. Mr. Mitsotakis updated guests with initiatives being worked on by the opposition party in anticipation of a change in government in the future related to promoting growth through investment and also stressed that stronger training and education programs for seafarers would assist in combating unemployment especially with the youth.
The members were given an opportunity to ask questions to the honored guest speaker and delve deeper into issues raised during his speech, provoking a lively discussion which continued late into the afternoon.
