Christine Lagarde, who takes over from Mario Draghi as European Central Bank president on 1 November, brings a wealth of experience to confront coming challenges, including a revolt on the decision-making ECB council against Draghi’s easing policies. But having never worked in a central bank, she may become unduly reliant on the advice of others, including in maintaining control over her 25-member governing council. Council sceptics now sense an opportunity to speak out forcefully for change in the central bank’s governance style.

Meeting: Monetary dominance in question

Wednesday 2 October, New York, 15:30 EDT

As the euro area continues to show low inflation and weak growth, the prospect of another round of monetary easing is growing. Peter Praet, former executive board member and chief economist at the European Central Bank (2012-19), will discuss the European economic outlook, monetary policy at the ECB and European Capital Markets Union.
