Volcanic eruption triggers alerts
Sunday, January 12, 2020, Batangas, Philippines

The Taal Volcano in Batangas started spewing out 1 km-high ash column this afternoon (12 January).

At 14:30 hours local time, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) had already raised the Alert to Level 2, indicating increasing unrest. Following the explosion, Alert Level 3 (magmatic unrest) was announced at 16:00 hours local time.

The Phivolcs bulletin stated that the Taal Volcano’s main crater had “escalated its eruptive activity, generating an eruption plume one kilometer high, accompanied by volcanic tremor and felt earthquakes”. Ashfall being showered on the southwest sector of Taal.

Phivolcs strongly recommend that Taal Volcano Island and the high-risk barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas be evacuated, citing possible hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami. The entire Taal Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone.

Calaca Industrial Seaport Corp has issued a Port Advisory (No. 2020-001) advising all vessels at berth to take precautionary measures and prepare for possible pull-out if the situation worsens. Vessels scheduled to berth are advised to coordinate with the supervisor on duty for berthing prospects.
