Democratic primary voters weary of President Trump’s disruptions and leery of Bernie Sanders’ social revolution are massively backing Joe Biden. His policies represent a return to the status quo ante. Whatever the merits of Biden’s achievements, his frequent gaffes make him look like a candidate who will get the nomination only because he is the least bad choice. But Democrats are confident that hatred of Trump will mobilise support for Biden. His surge in the primaries has shown how powerful fear and hatred can be in motivating voters.
