The contribution of the Greek Shipping Community to the National Health System, the frontline doctors and nurses, in the long-term battle against Covid-19, is of significant importance.

Quick to react, 151 donors have contributed a total of 13.1 million Euros, strengthening, till today, more than 55 hospitals and reference laboratories in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra, Larissa, Ioannina and major cities across the country.

In detail, the Greek Shipping community’s donation is as follows:335 ICU ventilators20 portable ventilators200 ICU monitors100 ICU hospital bedsa variety of consumables, medical and sanitary equipmentthe first negative pressure ambulance of the National Centre of Emergency Care for the safe transport of COVID-19 patientsseveral research projects conducted by eminent Greek scientists in the fight against COVID-19
Furthermore, the Hellenic Police, the Hellenic Coast Guard and the Hellenic Fire Brigade challenging work and their crucial role in protecting and promoting public health, is enhanced by the continuous supply of personal protective equipment and consumables. In prompt response to the Ministry of Education request to cover the accelerated need for distance learning, SYN-ENOSIS donated 5,000 tablets to support students and teachers.
In this course of action, it recently has been decided the donation of 20 fully equipped ambulances to meet the demands of the National Center of Emergency Care and 2 of the Hellenic Police.
By a joint decision of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and SYN-ENOSIS, the annual co-funded program “COLLABORATING FOR HEALTH”, for 2020, was dedicated to the procurement of 24,000 SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests and equipment, aiming to cover the needs of the University Laboratories of Athens and Thessaloniki and Pasteur Institute.
In close cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the renovation project of the sanitary facilities in the nursing units and in the public areas of public hospitals of Attica as well as the provision of bedding items to the 120 public hospitals of the country, is in full swing.In relation to the above, this demanding project, has been completed at the General Hospital of Athens “LAIKO”, the Penteli General Hospital for Children and Erythros Stavros, is underway at Evaggelismos Hospital, Asklipieio Voulas Hospital and General Hospital of Nikea, and soon after at Atticon General University Hospital, Children’s Hospital “P. & A. Kyriakou” and Pammakaristos Hospital. Meanwhile, the bedding items’ distribution to every Regional Health Authority has been wholly completed in the middle of February.
The reinforcement of the Hellenic Police and the Hellenic Coast Guard has been highly evaluated under the consideration of the current circumstances in Evros and the Aegean Sea. In this situation, their demanding task required immediate support, such as the supply of Hellenic Police with 45 equipped motorcycles and 10 vehicles and the repair of the largest Hellenic Coast Guard Vessel “GAVDOS”.The additional supply of Ministry of Citizen Protection with bedding items and mattresses aims at the improvement of 11.500 imprisoned living conditions, in 34 Detention Centers throughout the country. This action, which is still in progress until the end of February 2021, complies with the goals of the project for the enhancement of key areas in the field of public life issues.
The Union of Greek Shipowners, with the exclusive funding by its members and in response to the increasing operational needs of the Hellenic Coast Guard, made a significant donation of ten (10) Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB) RAFNAR TACTICAL 1100, equipped with thermal cameras and anti-ballistic protection, while their interior can be adjusted to transfer sick and injured people.This action is in progress, as only four (4) speedboats left to be delivered over the next few months.

Maritime Education
The Shipping Community focuses on the renovation of buildings and the upgrading of the equipment at the Merchant Marine Academies.Over the past few years, the Merchant Marine Academies (AEN) of Syros, Hydra, Chios, Crete and Macedonia, have been supported as well as, the Merchant Marine Academy of Aspropyrgos, a project mainly funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
Food aid and social welfareAt the same time, SYN-ENOSIS develops and implements its’ ongoing and multidimensional social policy through various humanitarian actions, such as the food aid and the social welfare programme, aiming to strengthen social structures that protect vulnerable social groups.
Assistance to the fire victimsSince 2018, SYN-ENOSIS has been conducting an initiative supporting and providing substantial aid to the victims of the fire-stricken areas in Attica, following up on the maritime community’s commitment, as an immediate response to the consequences of the wildfires.The significant repair of Super Puma helicopters, which are also included in the above plan of action, resulted in the immediate increase in fleet readiness. Thus, 4 instead of 3 Super Puma helicopters are now operational, approaching the ultimate goal of delivering 6 helicopters in total. Additionally, SYN-ENOSIS contributes to the completion of the repair or rebuild of destroyed residences from the wildfires and to the regular support to those suffering from severe burns.
