Putting your foot on the gas pedal of decarbonization

Many of the successes in life revolve around intentionality.  Legacy expressions such as “where there is a will, there is a way” come to mind when we look at the conversations which seems to be bubbling up around the world surrounding decarbonization.  While not a new discussion, it seems to be taking on a sense of urgency—which is helpful considering that the 76th Session of the IMO MEPC will begin meeting next week to (hopefully) agree on a strategy to meet IMO’s decarbonization promises for our industry.

There have been some real catalysts in the realm of decarbonization for shipping.  The human impacts on the planet are fueling the public’s demands for action on climate change, which results in regulations intended to drive industry to reduce its GHG emissions as well as incentivize technology to provide solutions to meet required goals.  But oftentimes this process, designed to level the playing field, is too slow to satisfy stakeholders prompting them to take action.

Last week saw a Dutch judge order Shell to reduce its GHG emissions.  It also saw investor activists at ExxonMobil, backed by one of the worlds largest hedge funds, gain two seats on the Board of Directors.  61% of Chevron shareholders voted on a proposal to cut its Scope 3 emissions (the result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by the reporting organization, but that the organization indirectly impacts in its value chain) and the French oil major Total is changing its name to TotalEnergies reflecting its increased commitment to renewables.

HOW we get there is still up in the air, but the ship has sailed on our intention to do so.

Keep optimizing!
