July 14, 2021: Carleen Lyden Walker, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), announced its position as a Founding Member of the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition. Other founding members include ABS, American Waterway Operators, Bay-Houston Towing, Caterpillar, Chamber of Shipping of America, Citibank, Crowley, Green Marine, Holland & Knight, Kirby, Lloyd’s Register, Marine Money, Marsoft, Moran, OSG, Purus Marine, Seabulk, Sea Grant, Shell, Port of Houston, Port of Vancouver – Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, Wärtsilä, and Washington Marine Blue.  The Blue-Sky Maritime Coalition members recognize the need to address global climate change and are committed to accelerating the transition of waterborne transportation in Canada and the United States towards net-zero GHG emissions.

“NAMEPA is proud to be a founding member of the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition as it will undoubtably accelerate and facilitate exceptional growth in the shipping industry’s ability to reach true zero-emissions,” stated Ms. Walker.  “Further, it will allow NAMEPA, and the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition’s members, to help Save Our Seas.”

With the official membership count at 32 organizations, the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition is quickly growing with the expectation of reaching over 100 members by the end of summer 2021. Through focused workstreams, the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition will facilitate collaboration among industry stakeholders regionally and globally as well as identify, evaluate, encourage and engage in commercial and technical pathways and projects that deliver significant near-term reduction in GHG emissions and lead to commercially viable net-zero emissions.

The Coalition aims to accelerate the development of zero emissions vessels and necessary infrastructure, encourage innovation in commercial and operational practices to reduce emissions as quickly as possible and promote policies that support the transition to net-zero emissions including policies that monetize the benefits of reduced emissions and allocate them in the most effective fashion.
