FERRIES’ Union RMT today issued a statement on the 35th anniversary of the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster which took the lives of 193 crew and passengers in waters off Zeebrugge on 6th March 1987
RMT General Secretary, Mick Lynch said:
“We pay tribute to the memory of the crew and passengers who died in the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster and extend our condolences to the community in Dover who were so badly affected by this avoidable tragedy.
“This disaster was one of the lowest points in merchant navy history and as the ferry industry enters a period of fundamental change, this Union will double its resolve to support high maritime safety standards for all seafarers and passengers using Channel ferry services.”
