  • Shipping accounts for close to 3% of greenhouse gas emissions – which rose by 10% between 2012 and 2018
  • Regulators are introducing stricter rules – including the EU Emission Trading System from January – part of reaching the IMO’s targets of a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 and net zero GHG emissions by around 2050
  • The shipping industry has slowly started to respond to those pressures but faces an investment ‘trilemma’ stemming from technological uncertainty – including the utility, price, and availability of greener fuel sources
  • So far, those technological challenges have dominated discussions in the sector – we need to swiftly examine the financial challenges and develop arrangements which will fund the decarbonisation of the shipping sector.

Our panel includes academics, shipowners/investors, sector analysts and a senior DfT civil servant

Hosted by Dr Ioannis C. Moutzouris, Associate Dean for Engagement and Onassis Senior Lecturer in Shipping Finance & Analytics at Bayes, and supported by the Costas Grammenos Centre for Shipping Trade and Finance. It is for shipping, energy, policy and finance professionals and media.

Panel members include:

  • Ahmad Abou Merhi is a Bayes alumnus and Executive Director and Head of Portfolio Management of Pelagic Partners, an alternative investment fund manager managing shipping industry assets worth over US$400m. He is a second-generation ship owner through his family-owned Abou Merhi Group.
