By order of the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, fire safety checks on ships are being intensified, especially in the garage areas. It is noted that, yesterday, a fire was dealt with that broke out in a refrigeration unit of a refrigerated vehicle (during its power supply) in the garage of the E/G-O/G “Superfast I”, which had sailed from the port of Bari, Italy, bound for Igoumenitsa.
In particular, within the framework of the extraordinary inspections carried out on ships throughout the summer period, the competent Ship Control Sector will carry out additional inspections in the field of both active and passive fire safety of ships. At the same time, special emphasis will be placed on the familiarization of crews through the execution of fire safety exercises.
The E/C-O/C ships that operate short international voyages between Greek ports and Italian ports are inspected – in accordance with Community legislation – by authorized Greek and Italian inspectors, twice a year, one of which while they are in port and the second during their regular route.
