This speech, part of UCL’s annual guest lectures, was delivered last Wednesday noon the 30th of July by Dimitris Monioudis who is R&K’s CEO, Chairman of INTERCARGO’s very influential Technical Committee and HESGB (Hellenic Engineers Society of Great Britain) president; one of the most highly experienced figures in the international shipping spectrum.
With meticulously construed up to date slides covering every aspect of INTERCARGO’s functions as well as explanations by drawing board, the speaker excelled in giving the audience of students food for thought on the work of one of the most important shipping business associations.

INTERCARGO has been the voice of the Dry Bulk Shipping Industry for 45 years – launched in 1980 (being the vision of Dimitri J. Chandris) and today has over 300 company members from over 30 nations – 37 centum of Planet Ocean’s Dry Bulk Fleet is operated by INTERCARGO members (8,000 plus vessels operated, 4,000 plus being bulk carriers)!

The speaker outlined the areas in which INTERCARGO is mainly focused:
Shaping the Regulations, Operational Challenges, Connecting dry bulk with other industry bodies and maritime authorities, Experience sharing, Setting the standards for dry bulk shipping and Excelling in the dry bulk industry; shaping Maritime Policy Through Collective Action and in particular participating in the Round Table of International Shipping Associations – INTERTANKO, BIMCO, and ICS (International Chamber of Shipping).
He also stressed the Improving Quality Standards across the shipping industry through the launch of DBCE (Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence) which was established on April 3rd, 2024 in London to manage the DryBMS program and promote safety in the dry bulk sector. INTERCARGO is a founding partner of DryBMS, a quality standard for the dry bulk sector together with BIMCO, ICS and RIGHTSHIP.

Finally, the role of INTERCARGO in the Safety of Dry Cargo Vessels was presented superbly.
Many congratulations to the speaker as well as to the thoughtful Prof. Dr. Evangelos Markopoulos’s choice for a sensitive and important area of knowledge very essential for his students.
