ABSTRACT

In recent decades, waste management practices have become one of the major global environmental concerns. Maritime transport has a significant share of the worldwide economy. Although the end-of-life (EoL) ships can generate environmentally hazardous waste, they can also become a source of recoverable materials. Ship recycling (SR) falls under the main principles of the circular economy (CE) approach. By focusing on this approach, maritime industry requires the integration of economic, environmental, and social factors. Decision-making methodologies are able to address multidimensional aspects, providing robust solutions to the problems involving conflict and multiple objectives. The aim of this chapter is to investigate the contribution of decision support methodologies to the integration of circular economy principles in ship recycling. Research papers have been collected and categorized to demonstrate their usefulness, to create a path for development, and provide the inspiration for future research in this research area.
