Size restrictions for traffic in/out of Chickasaw Creek |
Thursday, November 17, 2016, Chickasaw Creek, Alabama, USA |
The Harbormaster Special Notice dated April 2, 2014, established the maximum length and beam of vessels with power and steering passing through the Chickasaw Bridge. I also addressed the right to refuse passage for all traffic when tidal and adverse weather conditions so warrant. These restrictions addressed passage through the bridge only and not the channel.Based on the experience gained during the past few years and the present water depth in the Chickasaw Creek, the following changes are indicated:OCEAN GOING VESSELS, under power and with steering, less than 450 feet in length and 70 feet or less in beam can transit the bridge and channel without notification of the Harbormaster when carrying a maximum draft of 23 feet.
Larger vessels may pass through the CSX Railroad Bridge and Chickasaw Channel with prior permission of the Harbormaster for unusual type passage. The type vessel and its equipment, draft, weather conditions, condition of bridge fender system, etc. will determine if the passage will be possible. Each vessel must be addressed on a passage by passage basis. The Harbor Pilots navigate Chickasaw Creek in daylight hours only.
