Commentary: Patience needed over Rome’s ESM bid

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte cannot apply too early for funds from the European Stability Mechanism for fear of destabilising his government. He needs patience from Chancellor Angela Merkel and other EU leaders. If the EU agrees the €750bn recovery fund, Rome will sign up to multi-stage EU support. This will launch Italy towards crucial goals: boosting private investment in key economic sectors and rebuilding employment and public finances.
